That is an absolute godsend [virtual safety car] to the guys that have gone out on the slicks. They can't close up the gap but they are really glad that they don't have to push their cars. It was definitely too wet for the slicks.

    Chocks away!

Max Verstappen gets a great getaway off the line and stays ahead of the McLaren of Oscar Piastri. Lando Norris is third and Lewis Hamilton fourth but we've had contact - and it's a Racing Bulls. BBC Radio 5 Live

Red Bull boss Christian Horner on 5 Live: "It's damp and slippy, not ideal for us but its same for everybody. We'll try and get a good start and make use of pole. It's not slicks. At this Northamptonshire circuit, it's windy, typical summer's day, sun, wind and rain. Anything can happen."

  13. Formation lappublished at 15:02 British Summer Time

The weather has positively perked up now, but the cars continue to follow the safety car to the starting grid. The green inters are bolted on, but when will the pits become busy with cars eager to switch to slicks?

  14. 'All to play for' at Silverstonepublished at 15:01 British Summer Time

    Damon Hill
1996 world champion on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra at Silverstone

There's no way you can separate these two [McLarens]. There's just too little in it between them, the time differences apart from Austria, Lando put on that fantastic qualifying. It comes down to marginal differences. there's hardly anything in it.

Down to the start is going to be important, how you get off the line in the damp conditions. I still think the track is greasy, all to play for.

  15. Formation lappublished at 15:00 British Summer Time

Teams have fitted intermedaite tyres for this race start, which is understandble, and the next band of strong rain is expected around lap 11. Formation lap begins - behind the safety car...

  20. 'You can't count out Verstappen'published at 14:54 British Summer Time

    Damon Hill
1996 world champion on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra at Silverstone

[Max Verstappen] has got to win races, we almost counted him out didn't we? He was very much a surprise pole position. He found something as he does, you can't count him out, you cant count out the Red Bull.

There's been fantastic races between Ocsar and Max, those two are feisty races, we have Lando lurking in the next row. Plenty of pressure for the guys at the front.

The first few laps are going to be slippery.
