Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc edged Red Bull’s Sergio Perez by just 0.006 seconds in Friday practice at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Leclerc’s time was set late in the session, when the track would have been quicker than for some of his rivals, after a difficult day that included a crash in the first session.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was third fastest, 0.066secs behind Perez, ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

McLaren’s Lando Norris, Verstappen’s closest challenger in the championship, was 14th fastest after being held up by Pierre Gasly’s Alpine on what would have been his fastest lap.

What a great weekend we have coming up and we don't really know who's quickest, as we have seen different set-ups and the track is still quite dirty. But the track will evolve but it is setting us up nicely.

Perez has woken up and has been very impressive but Verstappen doesn't look like a happy bunny.

I can confidently say multiple red flags would be waving if I had to reserve a Formula 1 car. The TV cameras flash to an Aston Martin safely backing out of the escape road while others zoom by.

The time is ticking away and we've yet to see Lando Norris bank a fast lap on the softs. The McLaren driver is out on the red compound, but he's not pushing too hard.

F1 is so enjoyable at the moment and we have four teams who could make it on to the top step of the podium - at the start of the season we thought it would just be Red Bull.

Another trip in the time machine

Hamilton and Vettel were certainly not friends that day

Earlier we mentioned how Baku can bring out a lot of emotions with the drivers (as seen with the crash between Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen for Red Bull back in 2018) and the year before in 2017 was another crazy race...

Sebastian Vettel was leading the championship, with Lewis Hamilton in second, so tension was already high between the pair.

During the race Vettel hit the back of Hamilton's Mercedes during a safety car period. The Ferrari driver thought the Brit was brake testing, so moved his car alongside Hamilton and deliberately made contact - eventually receiving a 10-second penalty for the move.

Also it will be remembered as a race where Lance Stroll finished third on the podium for Williams. (In what was a happier times, Ricciardo was the race winner, that day, with Valtteri Bottas in second.)

Steady on, Nico. Hulkenberg screeches to a halt as he needs the aid of the escape road to slow down his runaway Haas.

The gap at the top between Charles Leclerc and two-time Baku winner Sergio Perez, meanwhile, is just a slender 0.006 seconds.

Oliver Bearman is showing reasonable pace at the moment. Haas have not had a car go through to Q3 at Baku, but could that happen this weekend?

  20. Leclerc to the top on softspublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 13 September

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu is chatting to Sky Sports on the Haas pit wall and says he is very impressed with the partnership of Nico Hulkenberg and Ollie Bearman, with the pair working well together in the early stages of this Azerbaijan weekend.

Charles Leclerc has not been a happy camper in second practice but now the Ferrari drivers straps on his soft boots for a qualifying simulation. With the track evolution in his favour, Leclerc shoots straight to the top of the table with a 1:43.484.
