Pirelli have selected the softest tyres in the range for this weekend's Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Teams and drivers will have two sets of the hard tyre (white, C3), three sets of the medium tyre (yellow, C4), and eight sets of the soft tyre (red, C5).

The green intermediate compound and the blue full wets have also made the journey, should they be required.

Last season here was a sprint weekend, so there was just one practice session available to get up to speed before qualifying for Sunday's grand prix.

With a return to the normal schedule this year, and with temperatures set to be higher than those during Baku's previous spring spot, three full hours of practice will be welcomed in order to see how the tyres will react to the warmer conditions.

    Baku forecast

From one dry weekend in Monza to another in Baku. September in Azerbaijan is warm and pleasant for round 17 of the 2024 campaign.

Sunny intervals and a gentle to moderate breeze are forecast for all three days of track action, with temperatures reaching highs of 29 degrees for today's practice sessions.

Sunday's 51-lap grand prix should see clear skies and dry conditions throughout.

  5. Welcome back, Bearmanpublished at 10:24 British Summer Time 13 September

Super-sub Ollie Bearman is coming off the bench again this season, this time to jump into the Haas of Kevin Magnussen - a car he'll be driving on a full-time basis in 2025.

Magnussen has been banned from this weekend's race after exceeding Formula 1’s penalty-point limit. The Dane was given a 10-second penalty and two penalty points on his licence, taking his total to 12 in a calendar year, for a collision with Alpine's Pierre Gasly during the Italian Grand Prix.

Bearman stepped in for Ferrari's Carlos Sainz in Saudi Arabia in March when the Spaniard was diagnosed with appendicitis that required surgery.

The 19-year-old, with just one race under his belt, is 15th in the drivers' championship, level on six points with Magnussen and Williams' Alex Albon.

  6. McLaren closing in on Red Bullpublished at 10:22 British Summer Time 13 September

Could the constructors' championship change hands this weekend?

Red Bull are clinging on to the top spot as we arrive in Baku but the advantage over second-placed McLaren is now just eight points with eight races to go. Ferrari have also crossed the 400 points mark and are still in the fight if the front two slip up.

  7. Verstappen remains in chargepublished at 10:20 British Summer Time 13 September

Max Verstappen remains in control of the drivers' championship and leads his nearest rival Lando Norris by 62 points. But the three-time world champion is without a win since the Spanish Grand Prix in June, with Red Bull still trying to iron out issues with the car that has hampered their push for further title success.

Charles Leclerc's sensational Monza win lifts the Ferrari driver onto 217 points in third place and another strong weekend for fourth-placed Oscar Piastri in Italy puts the Australia on 197 points.

Hello, folks. Azerbaijan's usual April slot has been replaced with an autumnal place on the 2024 calendar. Luckily for teams and drivers this weekend, the weather is a lot more settled in Baku that it has been here in the UK.

First practice goes green at 10:30 BST.

Second practice gets under way at 14:00 BST.

Commentary on both sessions is available across BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, BBC Sounds and at the top of this page using the 'listen live' tab.

You can also tune in via most smart speakers. Just ask BBC Sounds to play Azerbaijan Grand Prix followed by "practice one" and later, "practice two".

With the battle for both the drivers' and constructors' titles bubbling up nicely, McLaren have decided to make the big call - which some say they should've made a few races ago - and will prioritise championship chaser Lando Norris over team-mate Oscar Piastri in their bid to secure glory this season.

With Red Bull's dominance fading in recent weeks, how will the new team orders play out on the high-speed streets of the Baku City Circuit?
