Next into the fray is Geraint Thomas of Wales. The Team Sky rider, who finished 22nd in the Tour de France last weekend, looks stony-faced as he tucks in and braces himself for 38.4km of pain.

"It will be great to wear the Welsh jersey again - the last time was in Melbourne in 2006. I feel like I represent Wales wherever I race but to actually wear the jersey is that extra bit special," he told BBC Sport.

However, what he didn't mention to us was that he would be scoping the crowd for pretty faces.

"l'll be trying to focus on the road, - but if there are any nice-looking girls along the way that'll break up my effort a bit," he told the press yesterday.

Come on Geraint, eyes on the prize.

Wales' Luke Rowe is one of the latest riders to look out at that scene below and roll out onto the streets of Glasgow.

He finished ninth in the road race in Delhi four years ago.

His team-mate Scott Davies suffers a technical problems moments after descending the start ramp.

Up pops his hand, in skids the support car and away he goes on a spare bike. All in a matter of seconds.

Jersey have not won a medal in 24 years at the Commonwealth Games. Today is a chance to end that run.

Katie Nixon and Lindsey Greechan are in women's pairs semi-final action against South Africa knowing that victory would assure them at least a silver.

At the moment, Jersey's wait looks like it is set to continue. Nixon and Greechan trail 17-5 after 12 ends.

"Scotland's David Millar has been out of competition for a few weeks now so we don't have any gauge of his form but I know he will be highly motivated. In what is his last year of competition he will be anxious to go out with a win but I think he will be up against it.

"England's Alex Dowsett, again hasn't been racing in recent weeks. He is a strong rider and very good at the time trial, but perhaps this course will be a bit too technical for him. I've been hearing reports Wales' Geraint Thomas is pretty tired after the Tour de France. He has had only had three days to recover, so his performance will mostly depend on motivation. But I thought he was the favourite today."
