Kenya's Suleiman Kangangi was the first man off the start ramp at 12:30 BST. And his day is over after a little over quarter of an hour.

After his bike developed a problem, it looked like a pedal issue, he pulled a replacement off the top of his support car. That one lasted even less time. His cleets don't want to click in and, after a final stop in the Glasgow suburbs, he calls it a day, climbing into the car to retire from the race with his head in his hands.

Other names that jump off the starting list include Wales' Team Sky stalwart and two-time Olympic team pursuit gold medallist Geraint Thomas (14:18 BST).

England's Alex Dowsett (14:27 BST) a former team-mate of Thomas at Team Sky, now rides for Movistar, but missed out on the Tour de France this year with an infection.

"I won't be happy unless I'm on the top step of the podium," he said on Wednesday.

Australia's Luke Durbridge might be the main threat to the Home Nations riders. He gets going at 14:26 BST.

They are not really here for him though.

Hometown hero and defending champion David Millar is the last man to go and will roll off the ramp at 14:28 BST.
