BBC Sport commentator and gymnastics expert Mitch Fenner on Max Whitlock's performance: "What a class performance and he's just not faltering.

"There's only one other person in the world - from Japan - who can match him, never mind beat him."

Possibly the only real pretender to Max Whitlock's seemingly certain golden crown is India's Ashish Kumar. He won bronze in Delhi four years ago, but sticks his hand down on to the mat to lose some priceless points - and possibly a medal. His score of 13.800 puts him down in fourth.

"Alex Dowsett has delivered and has done an exceptional job. He missed out on the Tour de France and this is a great platform for him now."

The saltires flutter as David Millar comes down the home straight, but they are flying in honour of the end of his career rather than in celebration of a farewell win.

He ends up crossing more than two minutes adrift of winner Alex Dowsett.

"We rarely see anybody dig as deep as Rohan Dennis did as he crossed the line, but what a fantastic ride by Alex Dowsett to bring it back.

"He measured his own effort and allowed himself to lose some time, knowing he had to keep some back for the final leg. We said that final downhill section would suit him and it did. He took a huge amount out of them there. 10 seconds is an enormous margin."

Here are the two English boys. Kristian Thomas starts well, finishes well, but uncharacteristically loses his footing midway through his routine. He looks glum and is resigned to a total of 13.366.

Now it's Max Whitlock. Everything this man has done in Glasgow has turned to gold. "Breathtaking gymnastics," screams BBC Sport commentator Matt Baker as Whitlock finishes a perfect routine with a magnificent triple twist. Unsurprisingly the judges give him the score to beat - 15.533 sticks him top of the pile.

An impeccably judged race from Alex Dowsett who stormed though the final section and made up a five second deficit to Rohan Dennis with interest.

The Englishman came in almost 10 seconds ahead of the Australian when the finishline arrived six and half kilometres later.

Rohan Dennis comes home four seconds clear of Geraint Thomas and is the new man at the stop of the standings.

Only Alex Dowsett can beat him to gold now and he was five seconds off the Aussie at 32km...

Australia's Rohan Dennis' bike handling is getting scratchy as he tries to negotiate the final twists and turns and fatigue clogs the mind and slows the reflexes.

Dennis is into the home straight now...

David Bishop of New Zealand kicks off the competition and produces a decent benchmark for the rest. Low on difficulty, but high on quality. Smiles all round in the Kiwi camp as he scores 14.550.

Next up is Wales' Clinton Purnell. No noticeable errors from 25-year-old before he fist pumps the air on his final landing. But his score of 14.366 is just short of Bishop's mark.

"This one will go down to the wire. The passion was there from Geraint Thomas in the way he sprinted over the line and he has has eaten into the advantage built up by Rohan Dennis, but what a fantastically close competition we have got.

"Alex Dowsett is definitely in contention too but he is not looking as smooth as he did earlier. He was in third position at the final check and will just be wanting this to be over. I am afraid to say David Millar has been way off the pace today."

Rohan Dennis and Alex Dowsett are both wobbling in the saddle.

At the 32km mark Dennis led Geraint Thomas by four seconds and Dowsett by five. Who has the grit to keep pressing the pedals in the final four kilometres?

The Adcocks have really stepped it up a gear in game two to make it past the Malaysians in 34 minutes. The understanding between the two of them is that of a married couple, which is unsurprising because that is exactly what they are. England ease to a 21-11 win in game two and move to the quarters where they will face Singapore. Lovely stuff.

Wales' Geraint Thomas comes across the finishline, sprinting the last 100m or so and stopping the clock on 47.55.82 - it is the fastest time so far.

Will it be in about 10 minutes time though?

"It looks like it's going to be a straight shootout between Alex Dowsett and Rohan Dennis for the gold medal. Geraint Thomas, who is in third, has only got back from the Tour de France and people are wondering why he is taking part saying he'll be tired and might not have the enthusiasm. But he'll have incredible form with fitness levels and is looking good for that bronze medal."

"As predicted by the Australia camp Rohan Dennis is the man in form. His compatriot Luke Durbridge has really folded, and that is a surprise. Alex Dowsett still looks beautifully poised on his machine. That was a really good catch from Dowsett, taking advantage of every moment in the slipstream to sling-shot himself past Durbridge."

He had looked imperious in the opening stages but Alex Dowsett has faded significantly over the past 10km. He led Rohan Dennis by seven seconds at 17.1km but trails the Australian by nearly six at 26.4km and has fallen to second.

David Millar is still ninth, but shipping seconds. He is one minute 21 seconds off Dennis.

    Standings at 26.4km

    1. R Dennis (Aus) 31.53.84

    2. A Dowsett (Eng) + 5.92

    3. G Thomas (Wal) +7.18

A little over 10km to go from here.

Queen classic 'We Will Rock You' is blasting out as the gymnasts stroll out and wave to the crowd. Huge roars as the name of Scotland's Daniel Keatings is read out.
