Emma Pooley and Linda Villumsen come through the second time check and they have increased their lead over the rest of the field to over 30 seconds. The gap between them has stayed almost exactly the same as it was back at 6.4km though.

Pooley is ahead by 1.3 seconds, down from 1.35 seconds.

Australia's Shara Gillow has a rear disc wheel that gives a cool, backward optical impression. There is nothing too trendy about her time through the second section. She is more than 20 seconds behind Scotland's Katie Archibald's mark.

  3. Bronze Medalpublished at 10:53 British Summer Time 31 July 2014

It is a bronze medal for England in the open triples B6/B7/B8 as they beat Scotland 13-12 in the deciding contest at Kelvingrove. The English trio consisted of Bob Love, David Fisher and Paul Brown, while Scotland's team featured Billy Allan, Michael Simpson and Kevin Wallace.

"At the time-check Joanna Rowsell is 25 seconds off the pace and that will be way too much time for her to turn around, she has just struggled to transfer her skills from the track to the road.

"Katie Archibald is just out of the medals but only by a few seconds and she will still be in the hunt for bronze. But Emma Pooley and Linda Villumsen are a long way ahead and they will be fighting it out for the gold and silver."

The first rider is home. Antri Christoforou of Cyprus returns in 46:53.93. She will be toppled off the top of the standings very soon.

Meanwhile back on the course, the riders are chugging through the second checkpoint. England's Joanna Rowsell shows no sign of pulling herself into contention after a slow first section. She is 25 seconds off Australian Katrin Garfoot and looks out of it.

Scotland's Katie Archibald isn't though. She was two and a half seconds off Shara Gillow in third at the first time check and has just gone quickest through the second with her Aussie rival still to arrive.

  6. Road Cyclingpublished at 10:47 British Summer Time 31 July 2014

The two favourites come through the first checkpoint and both are significantly faster than anyone who has come before.

The trouble is we can't tell which out of England's Emma Pooley and New Zealand's Linda Villumsen is quicker as the transponder on Pooley's bike doesn't seem to have made contact with Glasgow 2014 HQ.

Houston, we have a signal. Pooley belatedly makes an appearance on the timing sheets and she has a slender lead over the Kiwi.

    Standings at 6.4km

    1. E Pooley (Eng) 9.29.07

    2. L Villumsen (Nzl) +01.35

    3. S Gillow (Aus) +24.84

Northern Ireland's Belfast Telegraph focuses on its country's boxers and asks the question: "Why are we so good at boxing?" It comes after their fighters are guaranteed at least nine boxing medals.

Scotland's Katie Archibald comes through the first checkpoint at 6.4km and she has shaved half a second off Katrin Garfoot's efforts to set the fastest time so far.

It doesn't last long though, as Australia's Shara Gillow snatches the lead by a couple of seconds.

"Emma Pooley is very good technically, she looks in fantastic shape and is the women to beat. But if there is anybody who can beat her it's Linda Villumsen of New Zealand. Also Shara Gillow of Australia could be a dark horse, she certainly looks committed.

"It's really coming down on the course now. The roads had just started to dry out but that's the pattern we're likely to see today."

They save the best for last in the time trial and the two favourites - England's Emma Pooley and New Zealand's Linda Villumsen - have just rolled into battle.

Villumsen won silver at the world championships time trial in Florence at the end of last year.

Wales' Elinor Barker and Scotland's Katie Archibald are out on the course and the patchy, drying surface is very different from what they have faced during their turns on the velodrome earlier in the Games.

England's Joanna Rowsell has just made her way through the first checkpoint at 6.4km and is only fourth quickest - just behind Lucy Coldwell of Scotland.

Australia's Katrin Garfoot is the fastest through there so far and has nine seconds on Rowsell, just over six and a half on Coldwell.

  14. Hockeypublished at 10:31 British Summer Time 31 July 2014

England 'keeper George Pinner was a spectator for the first 67 minutes of the match but has to pick the ball out of the net when Scott Tupper converts a penalty corner for Canada. England miss a couple of late chances to extend their lead, Ashley Jackson thumping the post with a penalty corner strike of his own, but the final whistle means England are through to the semis.

If New Zealand beat Malaysia in the next match, it will be England v Australia in the last four.

"England were dominant but a bit disappointing in many ways, giving the ball away too much and shipping that one goal," says former GB Olympic champion Sean Kerly. "The big problem was not getting the goals they should from the chances they created though. Three goals from 23 shots is not a great stat."

There are three checkpoints on the course - at 6.4km, 17.1km and 23.2km - and it is Scotland's Lucy Coldwell who is fastest through the first of those so far.

The 30-year-old was based in Melbourne, Australia between 2010 and 2013, racing with the Holden Cycling Team while working as a vet.

She returned to base herself in Scotland ahead of Glasgow 2014.

England's Joanna Rowsell is the 19th rider out, picking her way gingerly around the puddles on the opening few corners. Tucked in tight, she is pushing a big old gear. It's enough to make your quads ache just watching.

  19. Road Cyclingpublished at 10:20 British Summer Time 31 July 2014

England's Emma Pooley, speaking to BBC Sport: "I always race the time trial just on feeling. You know you are pushing hard enough when it hurts, and you've just got to ride hard for as long you can. This course suits me a lot better than the Delhi course of four years ago, which was just a dead flat bit of motorway.

"Whatever happens this week I can retire content with what I have achieved in this sport. I never even expected to be a cyclist, so I can be pleased with what I have done."

  20. Road Cyclingpublished at 10:19 British Summer Time 31 July 2014

It is not quite the packed streets of Sheffield or the teeming masses of Holme Moss, but there is a decent crowd out to hammer palms against boards and send the women's time-triallers on their way from Glasgow Green.

Just a shade under 30km for the riders to negotiate. It begins with a 14km circuit taking riders along Argyle Street, Buchanan Street and St Vincent Street before carrying on to the west end of the city, through Kelvingrove Park and a loop around the west end before heading back home.

    Sounds scenic if twisty.
