Northern Ireland's Michael Conlan suffered a nasty cut in a clash of heads before beating Mathew Martin of Nauru in his opening bantamweight bout.

But the 22-year-old, the favourite to win gold, later backed the decision to abolish headguards for men.

"I loved fighting with the headguard but cuts are going to be dangerous when you turn professional so you're better off learning now," said the Belfast fighter. "Boxing is just going to have to get used to it."

Nice touch as three-time world champion Matthew is handed a colourful placard, with the message 'Happy Birthday Nick' scrawled on it, from a little girl in the Glasgow crowd.

All in all it has been a decent 35th birthday for the number one seed. A curry and a few beers would top it off nicely. But seeing as he is playing in the quarter-finals tomorrow, I'm sure he will resist the temptation.

Alan Clyne is one tough cookie. Staring match point in the face, the Scottish number one produces four stunning shots to see out match points and frustrate England's Nick Matthew for a few extra moments.

Then the Yorkshireman decides enough is enough, spanking a thunderous shot into the side of the court to win 11-4 11-5 11-8.

It has been a good start for Wales in the individual all-around final in the rhythmic gymnastics competition with British champion Laura Halford leading the way after the first rotation - the hoop.

Halford scored 14.500 and is ahead of team-mate Frankie Jones, Pantelitsa Theodoulou of Cyprus and Wong Poh San of Malaysia who are all on 14.250.

The next rotation for the 16 athletes is the ball.

Nick Matthew does not need a party hat and bag full of presents to have a good time on his birthday. The English number one, who will have 34 candles in his cake today, is two games ahead in the best-of-five last-16 tie against Scotland's Alan Clyne.

Clyne is also celebrating his birthday today, but he needs a minor miracle to avoid defeat and make his 28th one to remember for the right reasons.

Wales were hoping 20-year-old Coral Kennerley would boost their medal hopes with a top-three finish in the women's 10m air pistol. Unfortunately she could only finish sixth as Singapore's Shun Xie Teo claimed gold.

Still a great effort from Kennerley, who does most of her training at home. She stands with one foot in the shower, shooting through the bathroom and bedroom onto the landing so she can replicate the 10m distance required. True story folks.

"Both won their opening fixtures 5-0 on Thursday - against Northern Ireland and Mauritius respectively - but England will be the favourites today. They won bronze in the event at Delhi 2010 and one of their team from that event - Olympic silver medallist Nathan Robertson - is actually coaching Jersey here in Glasgow."

Drama o'clock in the skeet! Three women are gunning for a place in the semi-final through the qualification play-off and six clays in, Cyprus' Panagiota Andreou misses her fifth attempt and bites the dust.

That leaves English pair Amber Hill and Sarah Gray in a saloon style stand-off. Teenager Hill misses her ninth attempt and that allows Gray to book her spot in the semi-final which starts at 16:00 BST today.

A packed Scotscoun Sports Complex finds its voice to sing 'Happy Birthday' to England's Nick Matthew and Scotland's Alan Clyne, who are both - remarkably - celebrating their special days today.

Both players smile and thank the crowd, but then it is down to the serious business of their last-16 tie. The cake will have to wait until later.

Make or break time for Amber Hill now.

The 16-year-old England shooter, who won the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award last year, faces team-mate Sarah Gray and Panagiota Andreou of Cyprus for the final place in the six-woman semi-final of the skeet.

Hill appeared to be cruising in round one, nailing her first 20 clays, but missed two of her final five and then dropped another three in the second round. A disappointing third-round 20 out of 25 sticks her into sudden-death.
