England's Fran Halsall set a new Commonwealth Games record earlier of 24.31 seconds in the 50m freestyle.

"I am quite surprised," she said. "Obviously after a late night last night I was keeping it all low key this morning and my coach told me just to get to 25m and switch off and just get through.

"I did that and felt quite good so it is quite a confident boost that I am in good form."

Defending champion and world-record holder Jack Bobridge does not look to have suffered too much in helping Australia win team pursuit gold on day one.

He returns to the Chris Hoy Velodrome 24 hours later to lay down the fastest time while beating England's Andy Tennant in individual pursuit qualifying, and looks well set to feature in this evening's final. With two more heats to come, Tennant lies third and in line for a bronze medal ride.

Michael Conlan must be wishing he was wearing head-guard. This is the first Commonwealth Games where the boxers, like their professional counterparts, dance around the ring without any head protection. Why? Because governing body AIBA reckon research suggests that it decreases the chance of suffering concussion.

But 22-year-old Conlan, the man to beat in the bantamweight, clears up the claret and re-emerges from his corner to keep Nauru's Mathew Martin at bay in the final round.

Martin puts on a brave face as he trudges over to the referee, but he knows Conlan has won at a canter. That's right, Conlan's arm is raised into the air. Comfortable win for the Northern Irishman - apart from the discomfort above his eye.

Someone get the magic sponge! Northern Ireland's Michael Conlan was cruising towards victory in the men's bantamweight, but is now cruising towards a bruising. A nasty wound opens up over his left eyebrow, with blood spilling over his forehead.

Men will compete in 10 weight classes, with bouts contested over three rounds of three minutes each. There are three events for women, who box over four two-minute rounds.

Points are scored for landing the knuckles of a punch on an opponent's head or upper body. Rounds are scored out of 10, with the winner always getting 10. Each bout is decided in the first place by rounds won, rather than points.

Ladies and gentlemen, let's get ready to rumble! OK, my introduction does not quite have the same impact as legendary boxing announcer Michael Buffer, but at least I tried.

That's because the first boxers of Glasgow 2014 have strutted out into the SECC. Ding, ding, round one.

Pummelled. England's first match at the 2014 Commonwealth Games is a 65-25 win over neighbours Wales. Cheered on by large English support inside a near-packed Hall 4B at the SECC, they started off strongly and became stronger - finishing with a 77% shooting accuracy.

New Zealand-born goal shooter Joanne Harten scored 33 of the points. Next up for England is one of the favourites, Australia, on Saturday. Wales will look to avoid their third defeat, against Trinidad and Tobago.

An entertaining and noisy morning in the pool saw Commonwealth records, two swim-offs and spine-tingling applause for Kenya's Ann Wacuka as she swam her final length in the para-sport 100m freestyle S8 heats, finishing over a minute behind Maddison Elliott, who was the quickest to finish. Plus, Ross Murdoch once again beat team-mate Michael Jamieson.

Seven-time world champion Nicol David of Malaysia continues her campaign in the last 16, while England's current world-title holders Laura Massaro and Nick Matthew play their second-round matches. Watch the action here.

But 25-year-old Jason Kenny is the only Home Nation rider who will return to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome later for the semi-finals.

Team England colleague Matthew Crampton is beaten by Ed Dawkins of New Zealand, who now faces compatriot Sam Webster for a place in the final. Kenny meets Australia's Peter Lewis, with the first race taking place at 16:01 BST.

England's Olympic champion Jason Kenny only just scraped into the men's quarter-finals, but now he appears to be flying through the gears.

Kenny squeezes into the last-four with a superb straight-rides win over Australia's Matt Glaetzer, perfectly timing a late burst to edge over the line by the width of an inner tube.
