Poor Michael Jamieson. This was supposed to be his Games. Compatriot Ross Murdoch did not read the script.

Murdoch, who pipped Jamieson in the 200m breaststroke yesterday, clocks 1:00.63 in the 100m heats, ahead of his team-mate who finishes third.

But only a fool would write off Jamieson just yet. Can he dig deep into his heart and mind to pluck out a medal-winning performance in the final? Come back here at 20:05 BST for that blockbuster.

Jason Kenny, who I'm sure is still reeling from seeing girlfriend Laura Trott's #commonwelfie with another man (see 10:50), is bidding for his second Glasgow medal. He was part of the England team that won silver in the team spring on Thursday, but complacency is not a word in his vocabulary.

"I don't ever spend too long patting myself on the back. I remain focussed on winning as many races as possible, which is hard enough," he says.

"In the sprint people talk about tactics but the best tactic is is speed at the end of the day, I just want to win and I'd rather be out in front with bad tactics."

Good start for England's Jason Kenny in that game of cat and mouse that masquerades as the men's sprint. He has just seen off Australia's Matt Glaetzer in the first of their best-of-three quarter-final.

On the suspension of Wales athlete Rhys Williams: "I think withdrawing him is the only thing you can do at this stage. I don't think we ever would have expected anything like this from him but until we know what the adverse findings are it is very difficult to know.

"It is a huge blow for Wales and I think for athletics because athletics in recent years has done so much to educate athletes. It's a real shock right now."

Wales' 400m hurdler Rhys Williams withdraws from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games after being suspended for doping.

Williams, 30, has been charged with committing an anti-doping rule violation following an in-competition test at the Glasgow Grand Prix earlier this month.

The 2012 European champion can appeal against the charges made by UK Anti-Doping.

"Let's go Robbie, let's go," sing a group of Scottish flag-waving supporters as their boy Robbie Renwick gets ready to dive in for the last of the men's 200m freestyle heats. Huge cheers as the 26-year-old approaches the first turn... the defending champion in third at the final turn, but the crowd's support act like propellers and he forces himself into second. It's all plain sailing at Tollcross so far this morning. Those wanting a dose of drama should search elsewhere.

Renwick is down at 22nd in the world rankings at the moment, but produces a decent time of 1:47.15 to finish second in his heat. The green and gold cap of Australia's Cameron McEvoy is the only man in his eyeline - and he's hot favourite for gold.

Former Olympic champion David Wilkie is unsure about the medal prospects of Scotland's 26-year-old Robbie Renwick, who defends his Commonwealth 200m freestyle title.

"He has to stand up to the game, he is in a tough event," says Wilkie. "Four years ago in Delhi was probably the best meet he has had. I am not saying he is too old for this but there are other swimmers that are certainly going to surpass his times."

"When Ross Murdoch won last night it was almost as if the crowd were not sure what to do. As much as they loved that a Scot won, it was always supposed to be about Michael Jamieson. He was the poster boy and there was so much pressure on him.

"Ross's face at the end, he was so surprised. That race has taken him, overnight, from not being known to now being the man to beat. Ross now is the new Michael. But having that depth, with seven home nations swimmers in the final, we do not usually see that."

Murdoch stunned Glasgow 2014 poster-boy Michael Jamiesonto claim 200m breaststroke gold on Thursday, but has no time to celebrate. He's back in the pool in about half an hour.

Wales are the lowest-ranked side at the Games and always knew reaching the knockout stage was going to be an uphill task. Now the road out of Pool A looks steeper than Snowdonia.

After holding their own in the first half, the Welsh cannot contain India in the second half as goals from Rupinder Singh and Gurwinder Chandi give the 2010 silver medallists an opening win in Pool A. Next up - hosts Scotland v South Africa.

"The warm-up is nearly over in the pool and most of the spectators are in their seats, although there are a number of empty ones. It's early, I guess. One swimmer is skipping on the sidelines, the majority are just gently doing length after length - but one Canadian swimmer seems to be snorkelling. She is wearing a snorkel.

"I can only assume she misread the timetable and has arrived for what she thinks are the diving lessons. She must be a tad shocked that snorkelling is such a well-watched spectator sport in Glasgow."
