George in London: On a weighted system of medal points. Any such system should not be concerned with the number of team members, but rather the number of discrete victories that built into the medal - for example Sir Ben Ainslie won a single medal for his efforts at London 2012, but that medal was won over numerous days of racing. Surely such events deserve more recognition than their briefer counterparts in order to counterbalance the opportunity to win numerous medals in quicker events?

"I've just had confirmation that leading English 3m springboard medal prospects Jack Laugher and Chris Mears will both compete in the 1m springboard competition tomorrow.

"The 1m event is a bit of an odd one as it isn't in the Olympic Games, so British athletes very rarely compete in it, but we know Laugher and Mears are both strong in the event and could now kick-start the medal chase before their main events begin on Thursday and Friday."

"Let's whack those bongos! On the big screen at the weightlifting is a picture of bongos and the cameras are zooming in on spectators, hoping that they will join in the fun and bang those imaginary drums. One silver-haired lady, dressed in a red tracksuit, stands up and really goes for it. She looks like Dame Mary Peters, you know. It is Mary Peters! Well, I never. A Dame - a former Olympic heptathlon champion watching the weightlifting!

"'I'm having a wonderful time'," she says. 'I've been to nearly venue, except for the badminton and I'm hoping to go there tomorrow. I did a lot of weight training for my competition so I really admire these people'."

"Sushil Kumar is not quite super-star material in India but he is popular enough to bring parts of his country to a standstill.

"Tens of millions are expected to be glued to their TV screens in wrestling-mad India to see if Kumar can add Commonwealth gold to the silver medal he won at 2012 Olympics. There's added spice in that his opponent in the men's freestyle 74kg category is from Pakistan.

"'Only cricketers and Bollywood actors and actresses achieve super-star status in India,' an Indian journalist tells me ahead of Kumar's contest at the Scottish Exhibition Conference Centre. 'Kumar is not far behind though. Will it be huge news across India if he wins? It'll only be huge news if he loses. He's expected to win'."

The women's team competition comes to an end this evening with England hoping to retain top spot and match the achievements of the men's team earlier.

England's Rebecca Downie, Claudia Fragapane, Ruby Harrold, Hannah Whelan and Emma Simm will go on the beam and the floor with the best three out of four scores to count towards the team total.

Scotland's team receive a huge cheer as they take to the mat first and you can see how they get on by taking a seat in the Hydro Arena (well, almost).

England claim their second gold medal of the day in shooting with Dan Rivers winning the men's 50m Rifle 3 Positions final.

The 23-year-old from Didcot, who won bronze in the 10m Air Rifle on Friday, was ahead from the start and comfortably beat India's Sanjeez Rajput and Gagan Narang into silver and bronze.

Scotland's Neil Stirton was fourth and compatriot Jonathan Hammond was fifth. Ken Parr of England finished sixth.

"Who needs to see a double inverted pike when you can watch the Herculean efforts of the weightlifters? Just in time for the snatch, but it's a fail for England's Mercy Brown with her third attempt at 94kg.

"Two women didn't show up for this 75kg contest and one of them was Australia's Jenna Myers, who fainted just before the weigh-in. She was taken away by ambulance and that's all the information I have on her at the moment."

Take a bow Charlene Jones. The 21-year-old from Wales produces a busy, technically excellent display to win all four rounds against Sri Lankan Hansika Arachchi and move into the quarter-finals.

Jones' footwork and head movement was spot on and with England's Natasha Jonas losing earlier (Jonas beat Jones in April at a bout in Finland), Jones must fancy her chances of going far in these Games.

Earlier, we saw England's Sam Oldham have to be helped out of the Hydro Arena after landing awkwardly on his right ankle after leaping over the pommel. I've just seen another replay and it does not get any easier to watch. Ouch indeed.

Not heard about the extent of the damage to the 21-year-old, who will probably be laid out in the bowels of Glasgow Royal Infirmary waiting for an MRI scan as we speak.

She's a brilliant fighter and I knew she was going to come and bring it. The reception we've that has been phenomenal - it's a great advert for women's boxing. We had to build on the success of the London Olympics and I think we did that."

Wales runner Joe Thomas was unwilling to talk to the media after thinking his Commonwealth Games was over when he finished out of the automatic qualification places in the final 800m heat.

The 26-year-old made contact with England's Andrew Osagie as he tried to find space in the home straight. Olympic finalist Osagie finished third, but was eventually disqualified. He claimed after the race that Thomas should have gone around the outside.

"I came into the home straight full of running but was boxed-in on the inside," responded Thomas later. "As I was getting closer to the line I was waiting for a gap to open up and Osagie came across and held his elbows up to try and slow me down.

"Just before the line there was a fall when he lost his balance. I think he ran out of legs but it's hard to tell."

Disappointing scenes for England at Cathkin Braes, which is the venue of the mountain bike cross-country and not the lead detective in a murder mystery. Annie Last produced a late dash to pip team-mate Alice Barnes to fourth, meaning they both just missed out on the podium.

"Unfortunately I wasn't in the shape I wanted to be in coming into this race," Last tells BBC One. "I'm really happy to finish fourth. It's amazing to have this much support behind you - you just feel this huge atmosphere behind you pushing you forward."

Barnes adds: "I had no expectations coming into the race so I'm really happy with it. The course is really fun and flowing so you've got to remember that you're racing as well as just enjoying the course."
