The Malawi Queens have extended their lead as this match reaches the half way stage.

Shooting at an impressive 92%, Malawi are cherishing possession and offering very little in terms of turnover opportunities for Northern Ireland.

Can they pull this one back and give us a grandstand finish?

Maybe they need a little bit of that famous Irish luck....

    Men's cross-country race

Sam Gaze has a problem! He stops at the technical zone shortly into the final lap - looks like something wrong with his seat - and Anton Cooper shoots off into the distance. The defending champion is opening up a healthy lead over South Africa's Alan Hatherly. Only a monumental mistake is going to cost the Kiwi a gold medal now...

    Men's cross-country race

Into the business end now. One lap - of around 5km - separates these riders and a Commonwealth Games medal. You could throw a blanket over front three Anton Cooper, Sam Gaze and Alan Hatherly. Who's got the most left in the tank?

Ben Oliver has fallen 45 seconds adrift of the leaders, with England's Fraser Clacherty, Canada's Leandre Bouchard and Northern Ireland's Cameron Orr still together another 25 seconds or so behind the Kiwi.

England’s Robyn Birch knew that all 12 women would automatically qualify for the final later but still managed an impressive total of 319.50 during the preliminaries.

“It’s not always easy when you know you don’t have to score big to quality but I try to look at it as an opportunity to give myself a confidence boost,” Birch tells me.

“I’ve taken that from today despite all of the wind and problems with the sun and clouds so it’s a real positive and I’m looking forward to the final so much!”

One young man plays a Vuvuzela badly. He sounds like Jim during that American Pie scene where he attempts to play a trombone. This kid’s mate has a cowbell which sounds the part. Then, through the trees you hear screams and supporters on adjacent parts of the course get loud for their man.

There’s a lot going on. Don’t know about you but if I had this climb to come, the last thing I’d want is out of tune sounds clattering my ear drums. Let me suffer in peace.

Wales' Laura Halford, who took bronze in this event four years ago in Glasgow, puts in a strong performance with the hoop, in the first of four rounds.

At one point I'm pretty sure she caught the hoop (which was falling from a height of around 10m) without looking, just as she finished a pirouette. I mean... How?!

She gets one minor deduction for a slightly missed catch, but otherwise her routine was superb.

Huge frustration for Scotland's Lynsey Sharp earlier. Failed to make the final of the 800m. Failed, also, to stop in the mixed zone to talk about it. Went through there without so much as a sidewards glance. Pretty poor. There are a lot of disappointed athletes at these Games and most, if not all, see it as part of their job to front up afterwards. Some have done it wonderfully despite feeling desperately low.

    Q1: Malawi 18-12 Northern Ireland

Malawi started like a steam train and Northern Ireland were playing instant catch-up.

They pegged the Queens back and got the scores back on centre, but a number of Northern Ireland errors and period of dominance from Malawi has helped them to open up a useful lead at the first break.

But a cheeky piece of skill from shooter Lisa Bowman and good defensive pressure at the end of the quarter showed that Northern Ireland have it in them to get back into the game.
