    Men's cross-country race

New Zealand's Anton Cooper and team-mate Sam Gaze are swapping places at the top as South Africa's Alan Hatherly continues to keep them company.

Another Kiwi Ben Oliver has dropped back to 10 seconds adrift of the leaders, with England's Fraser Clacherty, Canada's Leandre Bouchard and Northern Ireland's Cameron Orr clumped together another 40 seconds or so behind.

Scotland's Grant Ferguson has fallen back to ninth, ahead of Wales' Dylan Kerfoot-Robson, Jersey's Rhys Hidrio and Guernsey's James Roe.

Note the padding applied to trees near corners. No one wants to smash into a tree at the end of the day so I’m sure this relatively thin padding will make a huge difference. Or maybe not.

South Africa’s Alan Hatherly manages to avoid such disaster.

All the gymnasts will perform four routines, using four different pieces of apparatus, starting with the hoop.

The first-round track list includes music from Queen, Tchaikovski and Sia, which is varied, to say the least.

You can see the sweat dripping from the faces of some as they pass.

As predicted, New Zealand look nailed on to dominate.

This has drawn out another healthy crowd. A family day out for some as it’s school holidays here so there are plenty of kids bouncing around with their eyes widening when the whistle goes to warn a rider is to pass imminently.

"I'm really happy with the race. During it you never know how you're feeling and how it will play out in the end, but I just put absolutely everything into the race and focused on my own performance."

On her preparations for the Games: "Over the last year, it has really come together. In past years I've battled injury and illness, but this year all my hard work has finally clicked."

England’s Lois Toulson qualifies for the individual 10m final with the fourth highest score but knows the standard will increase in the final tonight when the conditions stabilise.

The sunlight and shade combo was a real struggle for some to cope with but tonight when it’s dark it will reduce the errors.

"I’m pleased with how it went today as it wasn’t easy at all," she tells me.

"This is my third major event (after the 2016 Rio Olympics and 2017 World Championships) and I’m getting more confidence each time but I’m not thinking about the medals later I just want to do my best."

Mrs Cooper (presuming that's her name...) will be happy. Her lad Anton has taken over at the front from team-mate Sam Gaze. On the back wheels of the two Kiwis is South African Alan Hatherly.

Those three have already opened up a healthy 11-second gap, with England's Fraser Clacherty, Scotland's Grant Ferguson and Northern Ireland's Cameron Orr - in that order from fourth to sixth - among the chasing pack.

This is the family of Anton Cooper - one of the favourites for the men’s mountain bike title.

The Kiwi won in Glasgow four years ago.

His mum tells me: “We can’t go and watch him much, especially in Europe as it’s too expensive. Now that he’s elite he is on TV more which helps as I used to just have to sit there and watch live timing numbers coming in.

“Hopefully he does well today, Sam Gaze - another New Zealand rider - I think will be strong.”

A scan through the start list shows the three New Zealand hopes are racing in the first seven riders to be let off.

Of the 21 men competing, only four are born in the 1980s. It’s a young man’s sport is this.

Representing Lesotho - Tumelo Makae is one of them. He’s ranked 220 in the world and has a tough backstory as he lost both his parents in a car accident as a teen.

The UCI world rankings of this involved range from number five - Anton Cooper - to number 1653, with a handful not even ranked at all.

    Surely New Zealand will dominate.

Brutal conditions for the athletes in the women’s 10m preliminaries today who are being really hampered by the sunlight.

They’re taking off in bright sunshine and then plunging into the shadows as they leave the platform.

Some of the world’s best have made multiple mistakes and we’ve seen some pretty spectacular as well as painful wipeouts from 10m!

The one plus for the women in this event is that all 12 automatically qualify for the final and their scores don’t carry over, so it’ll be a fresh start tonight - assuming they make it through in one piece...

This is the final corner riders face on the men’s mountain bike course. It’s bumpy, with rocks peering from the ground in scattered formation.

Even with a puncture at this stage though they can get home, so go Hell for leather.

These kids who have been given bikes to whizz around in for a while would love a go on the course I bet. That’s not happening. It’s wheelies only I’m afraid.
