The driving rain has returned to the Gold Coast and the divers (and spectators and commentators) are getting battered.

Scotland's James Heatly remains unaffected. He scores 67.50 on his fourth dive to move up into second place.

Heatly picked up bronze in the 1m event on Wednesday.

The first Commonwealth Games gold ever for the British Virgin Islands, but more than the medal, it will be the memories that matter to Kyron McMaster.

The 21-year-old's coach and mentor Xavier Samuels was killed when Hurricane Irma hit the BVI last year.

"I still think and talk about him every day," McMaster said.

"I even got a tattoo on my inner arm made of his favourite phrase, which was 'guidance'. Every day I look at it and it acts as motivation."

Kyron McMaster wins a thrilling men's 400m hurdles final.

It is an emotional occasion for McMaster, whose coach Xavier Samuels died in Hurricane Irma in September.

McMaster is shown crying on the side of the track.

England's Jack Green just misses a medal, coming fourth, with Jeffery Gibson of the Bahamas coming second and Jamaica's Jaheel Hyde holding off Green's late surge.

Aidan Heslop of Wales is only 15 years old and is competing in his first major Games final.

He's not having the best time so far. On his fourth dive, he can only score 44.95 for a forward three-and-a-half somersaults, leaving him near the bottom of the leaderboard.

Still, what an experience for the teenager.

Diving in an outdoor brings a number of issues for the athletes. Here's what current leader Jack Laugher had to say about conditions on the Gold Coast before he returned to the pool.

“We often don’t compete outdoors in major finals usually but day to day through the years, last year, I didn’t compete outdoors and it is difficult to get used to," said the three-time Commonwealth champion.

"The way the pool is and the shadows it creates and everything is very blue and it’s lovely worth the sun but it’s just difficult conditions. It’s a lovely place and I’m really happy to be here but it’s harder for everyone, so I am looking forward to tonight where it’s floodlit and black skies.”

    Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.

This race was hot with talent but what she showed was real steel. She stuck to her race pattern and she kept a very cool head.

Her lane draw probably helped her as she could see what people were doing and she knew when to make her move.

She's probably happier than she has ever been because this was such a grand occasion against such tough opponents.

Now that’s a stretch right there.

New Zealand go down the tunnel and probably think that’s a decent half. They’ve been under pressure in spells but they look like a side who haven’t conceded in their last two games.

Dare I say it, England may wonder if it’s one of those nights. They’ve fired balls across the face of goal, drawn saves and had several penalty corners. Something needs to go in.

The Scots have to settle for silver, while England beat Canada 20-12 in the play-off for bronze.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson's first attempt in the shot put was a foul, but the second one is a decent effort. It is 11.36 metres, but she at least has a valid mark. One more go for her.

"She really needs to find over 12 metres," says 2012 Olympic Games heptathlon gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill on BBC TV.

She understood this was going to be more difficult than the race four years ago when she took a silver. She is a strong finisher, a tough finisher and we saw that by moving from bronze to silver and executing the best she could.

Jamaican uberstar Usain Bolt, who hung up his sprinting spikes after last year's World Championships in London, has landed on the Gold Coast.

Unfortunately he might be feeling a little delicate when it comes to the sporting party. According to reports, he was spinning tunes and sipping drinks until the small hours of Thursday morning Aussie time., external

At a sponsor's event earlier today, he was keeping his answers short and sweet.

England's Katarina Johnson-Thompson leads the heptathlon by 27 points from Canada's Nina Schultz after the hurdles and high jump in the morning.

She is off to one of her less favoured events this evening, lumping the shot put out as far as she can.

  20. Stainton withdraws from heptathlonpublished at 10:28 British Summer Time 12 April 2018

    Heptathlon: Women's shot put

It is bad news for England's Katie Stainton. She suffered a heavy fall in the opening event of the heptathlon - the 100m hurdles. She has not returned to competition in event three - the shot put.

Watch Stainton's fall in the hurdles with the video below, and see how fellow England team-mate Katarina Johnson-Thompson lead the competition after two events.

It is not a good start for Johnson-Thompson in the shot as she fouls with her first of three throws. She deliberately fouls by stepping forward after her throw was less than 11 metres.
