He’s the favourite but won’t have it all his own way.
Jack Laugher is the Olympic silver medallist in the individual 3m springboard, but with just two full weeks of training ahead of this event he knows he’s not had the ideal preparations.
The 23-year-old has struggled with elbow, knee and more seriously an ankle problem which required surgery in November and has severely impacted his season.
Rising Australian star Matthew Carter - who is coached by Laugher’s old coach Ady Hinchliffe - could pose a serious threat to Laugher’s title challenge.

Curtis Dodge has just won a wrestling bronze for Wales. It’s not the first Welsh medal in this event. In Glasgow four years ago Craig Piling also took bronze.
Dodge is over the moon and says he can’t wait to put the medal round his son’s neck, but he has a problem. He lost a tooth in the quarter-finals. I asked him what next after the Games. There’s one priority: “Sort me tooth out.”
Athletics: Women's heptathlon - shot put
We are back under way in the women's heptathlon. Event three of seven - shot put.
England's Niamh Emerson starts us off and gets a throw of 11.86m on the board.

New Zealand - the world-number-four side - force a simple save from Maddie Hinch.
England are ranked two places higher, so can they make that touch more consistency pay?
A big scramble in the New Zealand goal mouth as England force three consecutive penalty corners.
50m rifle prone
Wales' David Phelps won 50m rifle prone gold with a Commonwealth Games record on his 41st birthday during day six of the Games, to add to the gold he won in 2006.
Speaking on BBC TV he said: "You're trying to control your pulse while shooting at a target 10mm wide. I train myself to hold my breath out to relax and help the brain.
"I was absolutely buzzing, it topped Melbourne X-fold and I didn't think I'd ever get that in my life again.
"It was really special."
Mike stayed dry.

There is an arts festival running alongside all the jock stuff at the Commonwealth Games.
So far, it seems to have been a lot of interpretive dance and singer-songwriters who haven't hit British airwaves.
But this made up for the misses in spades.
It is a little machine on wheels that trundles along and, via a moving funnel, wrote out messages in sand on the tarmac of a closed road.
It wasn't 'Kev 4 Bev' either. It was all about being happy, not using your phone so much, smelling flowers, telling your family you love them. You know, nice stuff.
Women's triples
Scotland have a huge task if they are to get back into this women's triples final. They are 18-9 down with only five ends to play.
In the bronze-medal match, England and Canada are locked at 12-12.
In the men's fours semis, Scotland are 12-7 up on England, while Wales are 8-2 down to Australia.
Men's 3m springboard
Jack Haslam kicks things off in the men's 3m springboard final.
The Englishman starts with sevens across the board and scores 63.00.
Here is the latest medal table. Australia have won more than twice as many golds than any other nation.

A frantic, but fun few hours ahead in the athletics.

11:05-11:10: Women’s T38 100m final – Katrina Hart, Sophie Hahn, Olivia Breen (Wales)
11:21-11:26: Men’s T12 100m final – No home nation athletes

12:56-13:01: Men’s 200m final – Zharnel Hughes, Leon Reid (Northern Ireland)
13:13-13:18: Men’s 800m final – Kyle Langford, Jake Wightman (Scotland)
We also have two more events in the women's heptathlon - the shot put and 200 metres, with England's Niamh Emerson, Katie Stanton and Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Scotland's Holly McArthur and Northern Ireland's Katherine O'Connor competing.
Hockey: Women's semi-finals - England v New Zealand (10:00 BST)
We have mentioned that it will be Alex Danson's 300th international appearance, and she has received huge praise from Kate Richardson-Walsh who was in the same Great Britain side as her that won Olympic gold in Rio two years ago.

Women's triples gold medal: Australia 16-9 Scotland
New mission for Birmingham 2022: become one of the prancing lawn bowls scorers. So much flare with those lollipops.
After end 11, Scotland take one but they've still got a lot of catching up to do.
Australia lead 16-9.
Kiribati's Glasgow 2014 gold medallist David Katoatau, famous for his celebratory dancing, finished fifth on the Gold Coast in the men's -105kg competition - the final of his career.
Speaking on BBC TV, before treating us to a song, he said: "I'm so excited and super proud of myself . I sacrified for this, I didn't win but, win or lose, i'm still happy. This is my last Games and i'm also happy for my competitor [Sanele Mao] from Samoa who wins gold."
However, younger brother Ruben is set to pick up from where David leaves:
"He's going to continue, he's 21 years old and he will keep our name going on."
The 2014 champion's dancing helped him in his aim to raise awareness of Kiribati's environmental plight - something the 33-year-old now hopes to continue.

It's hockey semi-final time!
Can England guarantee themselves a medal? It's New Zealand who stand in their way.
Diving: Men's 3m springboard final (10:07 BST)
England's Jack Laugher picked up gold yesterday in the 1m springboard final, with Scotland's James Heatly taking bronze and both have qualifed for the men's 3m springboard final which gets going at 10:07.
There is more British interest as well as English brothers Jack and Ross Haslam are also in the final, as is Aidan Heslop of Wales.
England's Robyn Birch and Lois Toulson, as well as Scotland's Gemma McArthur will then go in the women's 10m platform final (12:14 BST).
Despite being a gold medalist, Laugher produced a painful moment in qualifying earlier today as you can see with this video.
