We thought the Aussies would again be the dominant force at the Commonwealth Games and so it has proved on the opening day.

Eight golds have been put into the Australian green and gold today.

Host nation England claimed two victories, with Scotland also earning one. Wales and Northern Ireland have also already got their hands on some bling.

Here are some of the highlights from day one of the Commonwealth Games:

• England's Alex Yee won the first gold medal of the 2022 Commonwealth Games with victory in the men's triathlon.
• Bermuda's Flora Duffy defended her women's title, seeing off England's Georgia Taylor-Brown. Scotland's Beth Potter won bronze.
• In track cycling, Scotland's Neil Fachie won gold in men's tandem B 1000m time trial. Fachie's fifth Commonwealth gold puts him level with lawn bowler Alex Marshall as most by any Scot.
• Wales' James Ball took silver behind Fachie, while the Welsh took bronze in the women's team sprint.
• But they missed out on a medal in the women's team pursuit as the England team featuring Laura Kenny won bronze.
• Scotland's Aileen McGlynn took silver in women's Tandem-B sprint while England's Sophie Unwin took bronze.

• Meanwhile, England began their netball title defence in dominant style with a 74-22 victory against Trinidad and Tobago.
• Northern Ireland's Barry McClements claimed Northern Ireland's first swimming medal at the Commonwealth Games with a bronze in the men's 100m backstroke S9.
• England's James Wilby won the hosts' first swimming medal of the 2022 Commonwealth Games as he took silver in the 200m breaststroke ahead of Scottish bronze medallist Ross Murdoch.
• England became the first team to win three successive Commonwealth team gymnastics golds as Birmingham's Joe Fraser helped them to a big victory.

Blimey. What a way to finish day one of the Commonwealth Games!

Before we go, here's a reminder of what you might have missed...

What. A. Game.

"Utterly ridiculous," says the BBC commentator. Quite.

Scotland led 5-1 at half-time and looked to be cruising towards a famous win.

But New Zealand had other ideas. Four goals around the end of the third period/start of the fourth completely changed the complexion of the match.

In the end, both sets of players look deflated they haven't won. And they look exhausted.

Sport at its finest.

New Zealand hands on New Zealand hands. Was this the chance to win it?

Sean Findlay fires over from close range. How has he missed? Nobody knows.

Incredible drama. Little over a minute left...

Tired minds, tired bodies, but not an inch being given up without a fight.

New Zealand players are diving around to reach loose balls like a cricket batsman trying to make the crease.

Scotland are defending desperately. Off the line! And again!

Incredible!! New Zealand are back on level terms.

Sam Hiha cracks in from close range and Scotland's 5-1 lead has disappeared down the drain.

The equaliser came seconds after New Zealand lost Aidan Sarikaya to a yellow card and brought on a goalkeeper as a result.

What have Scotland got left in the tank? Can they raise themselves again? It seems a tough task, mentally and physically, now.

My word! New Zealand's fightback is well and truly kicking.

They score twice in the early stages of the final quarter, making that three goals in six minutes and taking them within one of the equaliser.

And that was without a keeper, remember.

Scotland are wobbling like a plate of jelly...

Ah. We jinxed Scotland. They concede in the final few minutes of the third period, with Sam Lane giving hope to New Zealand.

Suddenly New Zealand look like a different team, confidence renewed and swagger starting to return.

Their team-talk is full of hope and frenzied instruction. And they're starting the final period without a keeper!

The gung-ho button has been pressed...

The second day of track cycling finals features the men's keirin, the race where cyclists trail a motorised bicycle for a few laps of the velodrome before a sprint finish for gold. Olympic keirin champion Jason Kenny has retired to become a coach at British Cycling so Scotland's Jack Carlin, eighth in Tokyo, will fancy gold but two-time champion Matthew Glaetzer of Australia stands in his way.

On paper, the women's team gymnastics event is a contest between England, Australia and Canada. Four-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Claudia Fragapane leads this year's English team, which also boasts Tokyo Olympic team bronze medallist Alice Kinsella. Canada usually run England close but a much-changed team this year, led by Cassie Lee and Laurie Denommee, adds some uncertainty. Australia have 2018 all-around silver medallist Georgia Godwin.

With 23 gold medals up for grabs on Saturday you'll be pinned to your sofas all day and all night. Here's what to keep an eye out for in the pool:

• Tom Dean and Duncan Scott claimed a stunning British gold-silver triumph in the 200m freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics last year and are set to go head to head for swimming gold at 19:43. They will potentially go head-to-head six times in Birmingham, with Scott competing for Scotland and Dean racing for England.
• Scott, who missed the recent World Championships after struggling with high-intensity training following Covid, also has a big chance in the 400m individual medley.
• Australia will feel like favourites for the4x100m freestyle relays at the end of the evening, while England's Hannah Russell likely to face Australia's Katja Dedekind in the S13 women's 50m freestyle.

Scotland have been under more pressure in the third period, but New Zealand haven't made any in-roads... yet.

One or two early strikes might have tested Scotland's mettle, but they are coping well defensively as the quarter ticks towards an end.

It has been a marathon. We have had 24 games over 13 hours on the opening day of the rugby sevens tournament in Coventry.

Scotland's men side achieved quarter-final qualification with victories over Tonga and Malaysia to set up a pool decider with South Africa.

England's men and women's teams have their work cut out to achieve qualification for the medal matches after a victory and a defeat each.

After losing to Canada but beating Zambia, Wales will probably have to beat Olympic champions Fiji to progress to the last eight.

Uganda almost caused the upset of the say before having to settle with a 12-12 draw with Australia.

We will do it all over again tomorrow.

You'll do well to see a better celebration all Games long.

Ross Murdoch won bronze for Scotland just a few months after nearly quitting from the sport...

England are the top seeds in their mixed team group and they have showed why today.

After a dominant 5-0 win over Barbados this morning, the hosts have just followed that with another clean sweep against Mauritius in the night session.

England have won this event more than any other nation and they were bronze medallists four years ago, beating Singapore to reach the podium.

Singapore will provide the toughest challenge for England in Pool B and they also wrapped up 5-0 wins today against Mauritius and Barbados.

That means both nations have already qualified for the quarter-finals, which take place on Sunday.

Despite losing to Australia this evening, England's 4x100m freestyle relay team were full of joy as they spoke to BBC Sport:

Lewis Burras: "Tonight I wanted to go out and use the home advantage. Swimming is our passion, we get to make a career out of a passion. Not many people get to say that. I feel very privileged to be here."

Tom Dean: "Really happy to be here, the crowd’s incredible, we are here to do a job. We want to give it to the Aussies like we did four years ago in the Gold Coast."

Anna Hopkin: "The Aussie girls in the 100m freestyle is just… they’re insane. The roar when we walked out was nothing I’ve ever experienced before."

Freya Anderson: "I love the noise, I love having that bit of pressure. I think in relays I always swim better than my individuals, I don’t know whether that’s because I have the team with me. But yeah, the crowd were just amazing tonight."
