England became the first team to win three successive Commonwealth team gymnastics golds as Birmingham's Joe Fraser helped them to a big victory.

Home favourite Fraser topped the pommel horse standings with a score of 14.650, raising roars around the arena.

Well, well, well. Who would have predicted this?

Scotland have made a stunning start to their men's hockey campaign, leading 5-1 against New Zealand at half-time of their opening match.

New Zealand are ranked ninth in the world and were silver medallists in 2018.

But they have an inexperienced squad in Birmingham and have won just one of their past 15 matches.

Scotland are taking full advantage.

Goals from Rob Harwood, Callum McKenzie, Jamie Golden and Cammy Golden put Scotland into a 4-0 lead before New Zealand narrowed the gap through Kane Russell.

A cracking strike from Jamie Golden at another penalty corner restored the four-goal cushion.

Wheelchair basketball will make its Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham, with the fast paced 3×3 format taking place at Smithfield in the heart of the city starting on Saturday.

Three-time Paralympian Amy Conroy is one of four athletes selected for the English women's team, alongside Jade Atkin, Joy Haizelden and Charlotte Moore. She said it will be an "absolute honour" to represent Team England.

The 29-year-old - who lost her left leg through cancer as a teenager - is a key member of the Great Britain team that won world championship silver in 2018, and European silver the following year.

The 3x3 version of the sport is played on a half-court, with teams having just 12 seconds to shoot during each phase of play. Games are played over a single 10-minute period.

After both securing a finish on the podium in the men's 200m breaststroke, James Wilby and Ross Murdoch were beaming with pride as they spoke to BBC Sport:

James Wilby: "I mean that was one of those races where it was always going to take a big commitment. Ah, I would've loved to win but it was just such an incredible race. We’ve both had a bit of a challenging one this year, so to come away with a medal means a lot to us both, so really happy with that."

Ross Murdoch: "I can't describe what that means to me, to get on the podium tonight alongside my long-time buddy. It was a hard-fought race and it’s been a hard season. Every season has its challenges but this one more than normal. It's just an unbelievable moment."

Australia have taken eight out of a possible 16 gold medals on day one, New Zealand are second with three and England have two.

Just the five golds out of a possible seven tonight for Australia!

It's all over and Barbados women hold on to beat Pakistan by 15 runs in their opening Commonwealth Games match.

Pakistan had been set a target of 145 but just couldn't find the boundaries in their chase.

Murdoch retired in December, didn't get in the pool for 11 weeks, but didn't actually tell anyone. And now the self-proclaimed auld da of the team has claimed a fourth Commonwealth medal in his third Games.
