A solid effort from Scotland in the third quarter.

They scored nine and conceded 23 against top seeds Australia. Scotland can't keep the Diamonds out, but they're still scoring goals which is keeping the crowd happy.

Victory was never going to be on the cards in this group game but the Thistles have probably exceeded a lot of fans' expectations with this performance against one of the favourites for gold.

Jessica Stenson of Australia is striding ahead in the women's marathon now as the 40km mark flashes up on the screen. The legs are probably burning, the crowds are definitely cheering and the finish line is just about in sight.

India's Sanket Sargar takes the silver medal, with Sri Lanka's Dilanka Isuru Kumara claiming bronze.

England's Ben Hickling, 20. finished fourth with combined 212kg (93kg snatch and 119kg clean and jerk).

"I don’t have many words to describe it, to be honest. The crowd were absolutely electric and I loved every moment of it," said Hickling.

"We all have expectations and want to hit PBs. It wasn’t quite my day today on snatch, nerves got the better of me but I chilled out for the clean and jerk and really used the crowd to my advantage."

Without the catch it is really impressive from Dan Bigham.

How you sprint while keeping completely still, head between your hands and not looking where you are going is quite the feat.

England's Dan Bigham sets a new Commonwealth Games record with his time of four minutes 11.078 seconds in his heat against Wales' William Roberts.

Impressive stuff. That puts Bigham in the gold medal final as it stands.

Bigham is also a highly-respected engineer in the cycling world and works for professional team Ineos Grenadiers, having worked with Denmark's Olympic team pursuit squad for Tokyo 2020.

Scrappy Scotland working hardpublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 30 July 2022

    Australia 45-19 Scotland

    Becky Grey
    BBC Sport at NEC Arena

Scotland may not be able to match Australia for height or skill given the professionalism of the Diamonds' netball set-up, but they are scrappy.

They will not let any opportunity pass them by, working hard to keep every ball in play on their attack and reaching for any possible interception in defence.

It's serving them well so far, with three goals to show for this quarter. They've conceded 10, but still.

The closest finish we ever had in the women's marathon was when Kerryn McCann outkicked Helen Cherono to win the 2006 race in Melbourne by less than a second. I wonder if we are heading towards something like that?

    Australia 35-16 Scotland

    Becky Grey

We're off again for the second half at the netball.

Scotland are already close to bettering Barbados' effort of 18 goals against Australia yesterday.

Now to see if they can stop the Diamonds nearing 100 as they did in their opener.

It's been a gutsy performance from Scotland so far, all will be well.

Scotland confirm qualification for the quarter-final of the men's rugby sevens in Coventry despite a 34-0 Pool B defeat by South Africa.

Victories over Tonga and Malaysia on Friday had already booked a place in the last eight for Scotland as they are confirmed as runners-up behind a very impressive South Africa side.

Scotland will wait for the quarter-final opponents with two matches remaining in Saturday's opening session, both in Pool C.

Canada face Zambia before Wales play Olympic champions Fiji.

John Archibald, silver medallist on the Gold Coast and brother of Olympic madison champion Katie, is the first of three Scots in men's pursuit qualifying.

Plenty of shouts of 'mon John' accompany the 31-year-old as he rattles around the track.

He was hovering around third fastest until the second half of his ride, and the volume in here cranked up as soon as he went into first position.

And he held onto it too with a storming finish! Still quite a few riders to go, but Archibald is in the gold medal race as it stands.

The reigning champion was the only swimmer to finish in under one minute in the heats.

Scotland goal defence Emily Nicholl is on fire!

A superb interception in the circle gives her team a chance at a late goal, but instead it's Australia who turn possession around and grab one more goal for good measure.

Story of Scotland's quarter really. The Diamonds are just too good and extend their lead to 35-16 at half-time.

The Scots have scored four goals in this quarter to Australia's 14 so far.
