Jack Carlin keeps his head down and cruises round the velodrome. It's another Commonwealth silver for the Scot.

Eventually he musters a hand above his head. It's hard to tell whether he's pleased, disappointed, or just knackered.

Either way, it's a fine achievement.

Nicholas Paul absolutely trounced everybody, and no-one could live with him. What a fantastic ride.

Carlin did everything he could there, he didn't let himself get boxed, but was just outclassed.

Paul has proved he has not just got the legs, with track-craft and bravery.

Carlin rode the best race he could to get silver.

Jack Carlin was good... but he's not quite Nicholas Paul.

The 23-year-old from Trinidad and Tobago was the favourite but that doesn't always translate into triumph - as we well know.

But he takes gold after dropping a gear just before the bell, then scorching around the final lap to win by 0.406 seconds. Wow.

Nip and tuck in the early stages. And then Trinidad and Tobago's Nicholas Paul makes his move. He's stuck on the burners!

In the seats in front of the back straight, there are a clutch of people with saltires and Scotland t-shirts. A tiny corner of Scotland in the London velodrome.

They'll all be cheering on Jack Carlin shortly in the men's keirin final. Although one of the flags seems to bear the Inverness Caley Thistle FC badge.

As a Paisley man, Carlin may prefer a St Mirren one. I'm sure he won't mind...

That kick in the back straight that Andrews had whilst in shelter (slipstreaming behind Mitchell) did the job.

It looked like Mitchell was going to sail to it, but as soon as Andrews was on her shoulder she will have known she had no more to give.

Two sprint events and two golds for Ellesse Andrews!

After helping New Zealand win the team sprint yesterday, she adds the individual title to her haul.

The scanner at Birmingham Airport will be beeping like mad when Andrews heads home.

The 22-year-old sees off Canada's Kelsey Mitchell - the reigning Olympic champion - before going over to hug a couple who we presume are her parents.

Proud as punch.

Before the match got under way, Katherine Brunt was presented with a special cap, marking her 100th Twenty20 appearance for England.

Former team-mate Isa Guha, who racked up 113 England appearances across all formats of the game and is rapidly surpassing that on BBC TV and Test Match Special, did the presenting honours by the boundary during the warm-ups.

Northern Ireland's Jude Gallagher takes on Gold Coast quarter-finalist Zweli Dlamini of Eswatini in the men's featherweight round of 32 from 18:30 BST.

The 20 year-old has won gold at both the Irish and Ulster Elite Championships and took bronze at the prestigious Eindhoven Box Cup in June.

In the men’s light middleweight round of 32, Stephen Newns of Scotland faces Cameroon fighter Albert Mengue Ayissi from 19:45 BST.

Newns narrowly missed out on a medal at the 2018 Games when he lost in the quarter-finals to Fiji’s Winston Hill.

Jodie Wilkinson's victory earlier has been matched by England team-mate Lewis Williams, who defeats Pakistan’s Nazeer Ullah Khan by unanimous points decision (5-0) in the men’s heavyweight round of 16.

Williams, who hails from Leamington Spa and won bronze at the European Championships in Armenia in May, said he has been using the Birmingham fans to his advantage.

The 23-year-old added: "It’s quality to have my family and friends here. In the local parks they have got screens with people watching.

"Everybody is supporting, everybody is watching, my phone is blowing up with people sending messages supporting me. It's just a bonus, isn’t it? I’m just feeling a push, it’s not pressure, it's just motivation."

Finucane maintains the pace and can't be caught by her rival.

England might be out of the medal race for the women's rugby sevens and only able to finish a highest position of fifth.

But that has not seemed to bother the raucous Coventry crowd who are delighted as the home side ease to a 36-0 victory over South Africa in the opening match of the second session of the day,.

They will have one more game tomorrow evening in a bid to finish fifth.

Not what England would have wanted after winning a bronze medal in Australia four years ago but they will aim to finish on a high.

Women's artistic team final

More solid work from Scotland - 35.150 on beam takes their overall score so far up to 109.800. Just the one discipline to go and that is floor.

Don't forget England and Wales go in the later session along with Australia and Canada. That's where the medals will be decided but Scotland have put themselves in a decent position at this point.

There are also spots in the individual apparatus events up for grabs so it's all to play for.

The England bowler charges in, sends a rip-snorting skidding delivery pinging towards middle. It's progress towards the stumps is stopped by some pad.

Up goes the appeal.

Out goes Sri Lanka opener Vishmi Gunarathne.

A first-ball duck for her and a flier for Brunt and England.

The visitors take one run of that opening over which was as tight as piano wire.

You're racing as close as you can to the riders around you. Matt Glaetzer got boxed and went into the back of Jack Carlin and fell to the right, and Joe Truman had nowhere left to go.

Your heart rate is at maximum and adrenalin is flowing. In Japan they look like American footballers with pads but it slows you down. But with marginal gains and aerodynamics you try to find an edge where possible.

It is such a rare thing to have such a serious crash in the velodrome than on the road when you are training.

It is just one of those things you have to deal with and it reminds us how tough these guys are and how brave you have to be.
