The British government, the Irish government and the Good Friday Agreement featured in Rhys McClenaghan and Eamon Montgomery’s Commonwealth Games build-up more than they could ever have imagined.
Not to dig up old graves but it’s a saga that bears repeating on the day of the Northern Ireland duo’s finals.
The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) deemed that the gymnasts could not represent NI at the Commonwealths because they represented Ireland in international competitions.
Why, you might ask, was this an issue now when they had represented NI in previous Games? This was one of many questions raised by a raft of politicians (and pretty much everyone else), with the FIG initially doubling down before eventually granting the athletes special dispensation.
A protracted, and frankly bizarre build-up, but here they are in the final. Montgomery ended up coming fifth on the floor, but McClenaghan has his sights firmly set on the podium.

It's the fourth and final day of track cycling action today. Sad face. Seriously, it's been a brilliant few days, with the obvious exception of those two horrible crashes.
Coming up at the start of today's session is the first round of the women's keirin. That's the event where they start behind a derny.
We've nine athletes from the home nations in this one, including England's Sophie Capewell and Wales' Emma Finucane, who have already won medals at these Commonwealth Games.
But we're yet to see an English rider stand atop the podium - will today be the day?

Meanwhile, pensioner Rosemary Lenton, who is soon to turn 73, could cap her Commonwealth Games with gold alongside Pauline Wilson.

Bowls trio Owain Dando, Ross Owen and Jonathan Tomlinson claimed Wales' 10th medal of the 2022 Commonwealth Games with bronze in the men's triples.
Dando, Owen and Tomlinson defeated Fiji 21-7 to claim a first Wales bowls medal in Birmingham.
Wales have won one gold, two silver and seven bronze.

Image source, Getty ImagesEarlier England weightlifter Chris Murray took a brilliant gold in the men's 81kg.
He said afterwards: "I can’t sum it up. I’ll be in my room tonight still not being able to put it into words. It’s truly incredible.
“The guys in my weight class are so strong and that was a really close competition. I knew I needed to pull it out and I did. I’m so happy.
“I got back to my platform where I’d been warming up and I just collapsed. To come out and hit personal bests on the biggest stage, I’m so overwhelmed with that feeling and I didn’t even care what medal I got at that point because I’d done what I needed to do.
“You can’t ask for any more than personal bests. The coaching team did an amazing job at guessing the weight that I needed. They were right and thank goodness they were.”
On the crowd he added: “It was something I’ve never experienced and I don’t think I’ll experience it again unfortunately. It was incredible, so, so loud. I had to take a moment to compose myself.
“I stood at the doorway just listening, knowing that as I walk up to the platform it’s only going to get louder.”

Jake Jarman pulled it all together and that is what we have been waiting for. He has the difficulty level above everyone else. He has done incredible to pull it all together when it matters. That is three golds so far and hopefully there is more to come. Everything else for him now will be a bonus and that is a dangerous mindset to have.
FT: Pool A: Australia 74-49 South Africa
There seems to be no stopping Australia in Pool A.
The Diamonds have already seen off Barbados and Scotland and now they make it three from three with a 74-49 victory over South Africa.
Slight concern for the Aussies, however, after Paige Hadley limped off court injured and was sat in the bench with an ice pack on her leg.
Next up for the top seeds and three-time Commonwealth champions is Wales at 12:00 BST on Tuesday.

Hearing from the Arena Birmingham broadcasters that Northern Ireland's Eamon Montgomery put an enquiry in after his score was revealed, a mechanism that allows the gymnasts and coaches to challenge the execution score given to their routine.
No dice for Montgomery, though. The score remains unchanged and it's a fifth-placed finish for the 19-year-old.

England's Jake Jarman's score of 14.666 blows the competition away with Canada's Felix Dolci scoring 14.166 to claim silver.
England's Giarnni Regini-Moran takes bronze, 0.166 ahead of Wales' Emil Barber in fourth.
Jarman now adds to the team gold he won on Friday and the all-around he gold he collected on Sunday.
