Sam Short is starting to create a bit of daylight between himself and Daniel Wiffen, but the NI man is so, so far ahead of Luke Thomas Turley in third.

That podium is getting closer with every touch of the wall.

A kilometre in. Sam Short and Daniel Wiffen are the best part of half a length clear of the rest, the Australian has made a move over the last 100m or so and is trying to break the Northern Irishman.

Are we seeing two Kenyans and a Scot in what is quickly becoming a three-way battle?

McColgan has worked so hard to tire out the rest of the field and now she is in the fight for a medal if she can live with the two Kenyans Kiprotich and Cheptai.

The gap between them and the defending champion Chesang is becoming unbridgeable.

Daniel Wiffen became the first Northern Irish and Irish swimmer to break the 15-minute barrier in the 1500m at the World Championships in June.

His time of 14:57.66, if replicated tonight, would put him right in the frame for a medal. He was far slower in yesterday's heats by design, cruising through as the fourth-fastest qualifier.

A medal here would cap a sensational, unprecedented Games for NI's swimmers.
