Williams team boss James Vowles added during his chat with Sky Sports on the pit wall that the damage to Logan Sargeant's car "could result in a chassis change".

The clock has now dipped below 20 minutes of this third practice session and the repairs to the barriers are ongoing.

If you missed the news in the summer, Sargeant is being replaced at Williams by Ferrari's Carlos Sainz for the 2025 season.

    Alice Powell
British racing driver on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

I expect to see [Logan Sargeant] out tomorrow, but depends on the chassis, because that was a hefty hit, but I don't expect to see him out on track today.

So, early finish today for Logan.

The stoppage continues following Logan Sargeant's shunt. The Williams team are running down the pit lane, as the mangled car is delivered back to the garage.

The black covers are out and the mechanics are desperately trying to hide the car and keep everyone safe before taking it off the recovery truck.

Meanwhile, the marshals are continuing repair work to the barriers...

  6. What is the forecast for qualifying?published at 10:59 British Summer Time 24 August

    Zandvoort weather

The current conditions present teams with some difficult decisions for FP3.

At present, the eastward progress of a frontal wave (deluging S/SE England this morning) is sufficiently slow to reduce rain risk for qualifying.

    FIA forecast opts for 20% risk 3pm (local time); 40% 4pm; 80% 5pm.

George Russell, along with one of the McLarens, was right behind Logan Sargeant when the Williams driver crashed heavily. Russell tried to signal to the American to get out of the car and was quickly reassured by his Mercedes pit wall that he had exited safely. "Yeah, but the car's still on fire," Russell replied.

There are plenty of drivers who have yet to take to the track during third practice, one of them being Carlos Sainz, who missed a chunk of the second session yesterday due to problems with his car's gearbox. Time is now ticking away for the Ferrari driver.

  9. red flag

The pit wall, after Logan Sargeant had signalled he was OK, had to tell the American to jump out of the car fast because of the fire. The fans are watching eagerly as the marshals continue to clear the damage.

The TV cameras cut to the Williams garage to show a lot of concerned faces. Logan Sargeant exited Turn Three and with the slippery conditions because of the rain, the American dipped a wheel onto the grass and was sent spinning into the barriers. The right side of the car took the brunt of the impact.

Logan Sargeant, thankfully, is out of the car quickly and runs to safety, as the rear of the Williams is on fire. The marshals are now on the scene but the car is a mess in the middle of the track.

The other part of Nic Hulkenberg's wing is being dragged along underneath the car. The Haas driver makes it back safely to the garage but it looks like he has issues with the brakes, just like he did during Friday's practice sessions.

"I touched the brake and it locked up," Hulkenberg tells his pit wall after he went nose first into the barriers.

  15. yellow flag

A yellow flag has flashed in sector three and it's Nico Hulkenberg. The German Haas driver is missing half a front wing. Not ideal.

Norris led the way on the medium tyres, appearing on first impressions of lap times comfortably quicker than both Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

On the soft tyre, George Russell led the way on race pace, a fair bit quicker than Oscar Piastri.

Not that there's a stampede of drivers clambering to get out of the pit lane, mind you, as the rain is still hanging around the circuit. Lots of orange ponchos on display, accompanied by a pint or two.
