The sun came out - but the strong winds continued - for second practice as George Russell put his Mercedes top of the timesheets ahead of the McLaren of Oscar Piastri and his team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

Plenty of drivers experienced lock-ups at the first corner due to the changing winds in the early stages of the session, with Russell himself telling his pit wall he had a "strange" moment through the gravel at Turn Eight.

There was a brief stoppage for a red flag brought out for the Haas of Nico Hulkenberg, after the German driver spun at Turn One and was sent sliding across the gravel and into the barriers.

It was a frustrating FP2 for Carlos Sainz, who spent most of the hour sitting in the Ferrari garage because of a gearbox issue.

The opening session of this Dutch Grand Prix weekend started in wet and wild conditions before blue skies appeared and the track began to dry out.

Lando Norris, who said he has "not performed at the level of a world champion" in the first half of the season, headed Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 0.201 seconds, with Lewis Hamilton third quickest after his lap time was affected by traffic. All three were on the soft compound.

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, who was using the medium tyres, ended his hour in fourth place, with the second Mercedes of George Russell completing the top five.

There orange army may have to transfer their support to the papaya cars of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri this weekend, after home hero Max Verstappen struggled slightly to keep up with the pace of his rivals during Friday's practice sessions.

The three-time world champion has dominated at the Dutch Grand Prix since its return to the calendar in 2021 and is aiming to seal a fourth consecutive win at the 4.259km circuit.

But first he needs to put his Red Bull at the front of the grid, which could be a tough ask against the likes of McLaren and now Mercedes.

Is the sun shining brightly on the shores of the North Sea today?

Nope. It's practically autumn already at Zandvoort.
