"Full ball. New man in Taylor, who scored 98 against Australia, but doesn't get a chance to score any today. Just when England looked like trying to impose themselves on New Zealand, bang, bang, two go in quick succession."

England are in a bit of a pickle now! New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum pulls a masterstroke by bringing Tim Southee back into the attack and the paceman gets a fullish delivery to shape away from James Taylor and smash into the off stump. Jaffa.

"Adam Milne was placed at a straight-ish long-on, halfway between the fence and the infield. I thought he was moving too slowly, but he ran to his right, had to accelerate in the last few yards, dived to his right and then had to cushion his elbows to ensure it didn't spill out."

It never rains, but it pours. England's woefully out of touch skipper Eoin Morgan battles hard for 40 balls then hits Daniel Vettori back over his head where Adam Milne takes a fantastic, diving catch at long-on. Great athleticism - not that Morgan will take much comfort from it.

Morgan brings up the England 100 as he clips one off his legs from Corey Anderson. It comes from 147 balls with the second 50 taking five more balls than the first 50 did. A couple of quick singles as the pressure continues to be exerted by this energetic New Zealand side and as we reach the halfway mark, it's time for me to hand you over to Marc Higginson.

"There's the joy of deception with Daniel Vettori. He looks like a student. He's a well-known cricketing nerd."

Daniel Vettori switches ends and replaces Milne who has a three-over burst for his second spell. Field is a bit more spread now, but Morgan and Root still finding that gaps are at a premium with just two singles added.

"New Zealand have got to keep going because one more wicket would put so much pressure on the England lower order."

All-rounder Corey Anderson replaces Vettori and the crowd at "The Cake Tin" looks like it's building nicely to the anticipated full house we heard about earlier. Morgan gets a welcome boundary as he drives a full and outswinging ball to the cover fence. You can almost see the relief on his face as he gets himself going.

Ollie, Sheffield: New Zealand's fielding has been exceptional today. Must have saved 20-30 runs already. Their energy is a great blueprint for England and all other ODI sides.

  11. Eng 89-3 (run rate 4.05)published at 02:41 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2015

England look like they're content to hang in there for the time being with ones and twos. Root plays a handsome shot down the ground off Milne and Brendon McCullum pulls off a brilliant chase to the rope to deny him four.

"It looks as though England don't quite believe in themselves. Is part of that because Alastair Cook was removed and they are learning to play in a different way?"

  13. Eng 84-3 (Vettori 4-0-13-0)published at 02:36 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2015

Daniel Vettori the wily task master is weaving some tight overs together here for his captain with his left-arm spin. England can only pick up the ones and twos so far from the spectacled spinner.

Aashish, external: Watching the steady drizzle through the windows is more entertaining than this England I hesitate to say performance.

England have gone more than seven overs without a boundary and just as that graphic disappears from the screens, Root breaks the drought. He top-edges a pull shot fine to the fence for a much-needed four.

  17. Email tms@bbc.co.ukpublished at 02:33 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2015

Dean Scheu: Ballance can't play in this ODI side... I hate to say it but bring back Bopara or give Hales a go at three. No good taking up balls and getting out cheap over and over again.

  18. Eng 72-3 (Root 21, Morgan 5)published at 02:30 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2015

England hovering at just under four runs-an-over at the moment. Definitely below where they want to be, but as has been said before, they need to build a partnership here. Vettori concedes just one run from his third over.

  20. Eng 71-3 (Eng won toss)published at 02:26 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2015

Adam Milne is back on and replaces Trent Boult whose opening spell reads 8-1-30-1. Milne gets in very close to the stumps and in to the danger area in his follow through. Rod Tucker appears to give him an early warning to stay off the middle of the pitch. A tidy maiden over from the right-armer as Morgan looks to get his eye in.
