Simon Witt:, external "I don't care how good a ball is, both opening batsmen getting out clean bowled is absolutely pathetic"

Chris Leach, external: "It's almost like England don't care how much caffeine I've had, hoping they'd last 50 overs. how very rude of them."

  2. Eng 39-2 (Ballance 5, Root 1)published at 01:41 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2015

Trent Boult gets the ball up to the batsmen full and swinging. He takes a tumble in his follow through after coming round the wicket to Root. Not a lot of grace about that. Not sure Tom Daley would be much of a fan. A wide and two singles from the over.

"There was much kerfuffle in the TMS box at the fall of that Moeen wicket. As Geoffrey Boycott came off commentary, I asked if the ball moved. 'No, it was just out.'"

Joe Root in at four and Brendon McCullum is really going for it with a field of four slips. A poor shot from Root's third ball as he wafts his bat at one outside off in an attempt to cut it away. Wicket maiden for Tim Southee which is greeted by healthy applause from the home contingent.

"That was the same as Bell - the bowler get's it right up there, the batsman is a bit late. When you get these very tall bowlers the ball comes down at an angle, it's very disconcerting. He's only a medium-fast bowler but all credit to the bowler."

Yorked him. Tim Southee picks up his second wicket with a well-executed bit of bowling to do for Moeen Ali. He's caught on the crease and it's through him, hitting the base of middle and off stump with a beauty. England yet again in a spot of early bother.

If England were looking for a positive omen for this game, their female counterparts couldn't provide it.

England women have lost the second Twenty20 international against New Zealand by six wickets in Whangarei as they hosts levelled the three-match series.

Lauren Winfield's 48 helped England post 122-5, but an opening stand of 64 between Rachel Priest (41) and Suzie Bates (33) helped the White Ferns overhaul the target with four balls to spare.

The series decider will take place in Lincoln on 24 February (23 February at 22:00 GMT).

So Ballance survives an early scare and New Zealand will feel a bit unlucky that review didn't go their way. Four runs picked off the remainder of the over as England start off at just under a run a ball.

Alex Harvey in a chilly Cologne: I hate to paint a picture before we've even got our teeth into the second game. But our confidence is shot, our form is at best average, and even I struggle to work out how many 'world-class' players we have. We'll make it hard work, get out of the group but if we make it to the semis I'll eat my Karneval-hat!

  10. Umpire reviewpublished at 01:29 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2015

Boult continues and first ball of the over has a big shout for leg before against the left-handed Gary Ballance. Given not out by umpire Rod Tucker and after some pondering Brendon McCullum calls for a review. The DRS replays come through and they show Ballance is saved on "umpire's call" even though the ball would've clipped the top of middle and leg stump. That's New Zealand's review gone and it stays not out.

  12. Eng 31-1 (Moeen 19 off 12 balls)published at 01:24 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2015

Gary Ballance is the new man in at three and he's off the mark first ball with a single. Moeen takes charge and drives two successive fours through the the off side. Both a bit of class timing before a touch of luck with one the next ball he slashes through the slip cordon for four more past a wide slip. An eventful over.

"It wasn't full length, it was a quite easy half volley and he's our in form man on a good pitch. It looks like he's just missed it. If you watch him he's going inside out. It's a mistake unfortunately."

First breakthrough for New Zealand and Tim Southee gets through Ian Bell's defences to bowl the Warwickshire man. He was looking to hit the ball through the off side and had made some room towards the leg side and the good length ball from Southee hits the top of off stump.

  16. Eng 18-0 (Moeen 7, Bell 8)published at 01:18 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2015

Trent Boult in to a second over and Ian Bell takes advantage of a rare short and wide ball from the left-armer to cut him away for four. Some steady accumulation from England's openers from the rest of the over as Moeen and Bell look to get this scoreboard ticking early on.

  18. Eng 11-0 (Moeen 6, Bell 2)published at 01:14 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2015

Tim Southee continues. His slip cordon is only three-strong to Bell and Moeen. Southee strays in line with a short ball down the leg side which is called wide. There's a hint of movement back in to the left-handed Moeen. But, Moeen latches on to another short ball with a pull behind square for the first boundary of the match. Steady start.

Left-arm seamer Trent Boult opens from the other end with a four-strong slip cordon as Brendon McCullum backs his bowler to get some early movement. Both Moeen and Bell get off the mark with singles. McCullum dives on a Moeen drive wide of mid-off to restrict the Worcestershire man's early scoring.
