  1. Pak 138-5 (Misbah 59, Maqsood 7)published at 06:16 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

Some news on Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura, who picked up an injury as he unsuccessfully chased and failed to stop Misbah-ul-Haq's shot going for four.

As he sprinted after the ball, he slipped over, landed on his knee and had to be helped off the field.

Well, the latest news is that Chigumbura is currently having an MRI scan to determine the extent of the injury, although it is feared that he has torn a muscle. If so, that may well be the end of his World Cup.

Wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor is currently filling in as stand-in captain.

    "Sri Lanka are 644-2 in their last 2 ODIs (332-1 & 312-1). Sri Lanka are 543-1 in their last 2 WC matches v Eng (231-0 & 312-1)."

So the story of the match so far.

    • Pakistan lose Nasir Jamshed and Ahmed Shehzad inside the first four overs with them on 4-2.

    • They slowly consolidate, limping to 33-2 off 15 overs.

    • Helped by a half-century from Misbah-ul-Haq and 33 from Umar Akmal they move to 127-3.

    • Zimbabwe's Sean Williams strikes twice in three balls, including the wicket of Shahid Afridi.

It is Shahid Afridi's 35th birthday today. He lasts two balls before he trudges back off the field. That's two wickets in three balls for Sean Williams. Afridi had attempted a defensive shot, but got his angles wrong as the ball crashed into the top of off stump.

"Shahid Afridi's World Cup batting average of 12.95 is the lowest of anyone who has played 20 or more World Cup innings. (Next: Shaun Pollock 17.43). Afridi needs two runs to join Sanath Jayasuriya as the only players with 8,000 runs and 300 wickets in ODIs."

Perfect timing. Just as you join me, Pakistan's Umar Akmal, who has led the fightback, is out, bowled by Sean Williams. Akmal made it look an even better delivery than it actually was, because he had moved inside the line and was trying to push that inside-out through cover. Next in is Shahid Afridi, who has been moved up the order.

Thanks Marc. Morning everyone. And it is another depressing morning for English cricket fans. They went slowly at stages during their innings, battled back to what appeared to be a respectable total, but were then toothless in attack as Sri Lanka cruised to victory.

Well, we have some similarities with today's other World Cup game. So far Pakistan have started slowly, and then fought back. Will they make a respectable total? Will they bowl badly? Stay with us and we will find out.

Geoffrey's not happy. And it's hard to disagree. England have been well and truly hammered.

It's time for me to hand over the reins to Michael Emons now, who is looking after Pakistan's game against Zimbabwe. Night!

    Andrew Samson
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

"Sri Lanka are the first team to have a 200 partnership for the second wicket in consecutive ODIs, while Kumar Sangakkara is the second player to score a century off 75 or fewer balls in consecutive ODI innings. The other one is Sanath Jaysuriya (72 balls v England and 64 balls v Netherlands, 2006).

"The selectors are to blame, and the managing director. They decided to cut Kevin Pietersen adrift because you're going to back Cook as captain. And then what happens? Cook can't do the job.

"If we go on playing so poorly, the new ECB chairman won't stick losing like that. Somebody's head will have to roll. It's a results business. They're nice lads and they've got nice families, but that is immaterial.

"Even if England do make it to the quarter-finals, it won't matter, because they're not playing well enough to win. There's too many things that aren't right."

  12. 'We didn't have a cutting edge'published at 05:51 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

England batsman Joe Root on BBC Test Match Special: "I thought at the half-time mark 310 was a good score. I think back to dropping that catch myself. If you look at the sides that have been successful so far in this tournament, they've taken early wickets and got into middle order. We couldn't do that today, we didn't have a cutting edge.

"The first two games we were outperformed in all three departments. Today we've come across Sangakkara, who's in the form of his life.

"I think it's harsh to say the batting was timid. In the middle overs, Mathews and Perera bowled an exceptional line and length - you have to give them credit.

"The lads in that changing room are hurting and we'll be desperate to get out and put in a good performance again."

  13. 'Two of the best knocks ever seen'published at 05:50 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews: "I thought 310 was a bit too much but it was a brilliant partnership by Sangakkara and Thirimanne. We knew we could chase 300 but they were two of the best knocks we've ever seen. If the bowlers fail the batters need to step up and get us a win and the top four have really been great in these last few days. Not many teams have chased 300 in this World Cup but it was a great performance. All that matters is the quarter-finals onwards so hopefully we can reach peak level then."

Eoin Morgan said there were positives to be taken, pointing at the batting. Surely there are no positives after a defeat like that?

"The bowling is a different problem. If we get pitches like you used to get 30 years, we'd have a fabulous attack. But most of the pitches nowadays are drop-ins - there's no swing. Anderson is straight up and down, Broad is straight up and down, and the batsmen just swing through the line. And Finn is nowhere near where he used to be, he hasn't got the pace and bounce that he used to have."

  16. 'Punished by experienced side'published at 05:48 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

England captain Eoin Morgan: "At half time we went in thinking we had a more than par score. Joe Root was exceptional - it sums up the year he's had.

"I was happy at half time. Sri Lanka tied us down in a 7-8 over spell but we built it up for the back end. We're very flexible in our batting order but we thought it was the right move sending James (Taylor) in.

"We were punished today by a very experienced side. We were way off the mark today. When we are bowling well, it's a good attack but you can pick it apart when we're not bowling well and today we didn't bowl well."

  17. Pakistan v Zimbabwe latestpublished at 05:47 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2015

We finally have some urgency from the Pakistan batsmen. Umar Akmal has decided he will be the one that moves things on and has hit 28 off 29 balls, including two delightful fours, both pulled over midwicket, and another boundary which was flicked away off his pads.

Misbah-ul-Haq (pictured), who has never made a one-day international century, is still there at the other end and is closing in on a hard-fought, but slow, half-century. Zimbabwe do not want to let their earlier good work go to waste. This could be a crucial part of this Pool B match.

Gary Ballance, if you need reminding, scored a very scratchy six off 10 balls. He's in danger of being damaged by this situation.

"A lot of ex-players still think we don't have a very good one-day side. It was ridiculous that the team was unchanged today. We've all been saying that Ballance isn't a number three, it's ridiculous that Hales is sat on the bench, but the backroom staff are so bloody-minded. We don't have a great one-day team, but it could be better than it is."
