"Spidercam has been known to have an adverse affect on players - Steven Smith once blamed it when he dropped a catch. Today, it's getting perilously close to the action. At its lowest, Mohammad Irfan could reach up and grab it. That could go two ways. He either pulls it off its strings, or ends up soaring above the action like a trapeze artist."

  2. Pak 140-1 (Shehzad 70, Haris 60)published at 03:04 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

Some comedy fielding on the cow corner boundary from substitute fielder Saqlain Haider - who attacks the ball looking to put the batsmen under pressure, but misses it and watches it trickle onto the rope - gifts Shehzad a rather unearned four, which also dents captain Tauqir's bowling figures a little. Nasir Jamshed must be kicking himself for missing out on some easy runs here.

"I think the Pakistan batsman are just taking a look at Karate's medium pace to begin with. I think if he over pitches, we could be in danger here in the commentary box."

  4. Pak 134-1 (partnership 124)published at 03:01 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

Olympic martial arts stars wear helmets for Taekwondo - and in the same fashion, the Pakistan batsmen remove their caps and summon their helmets for Karate. The twin-spin approach is ended as slow left-armer Khurram is replaced by the right-arm medium pace of Krishna Chandran, better known as Krishna Karate. While his gentle pace won't worry the second-wicket pair, Shehzad has to be cautious as he looks to run the ball down to third man but sees the ball smack into the keeper's gloves. Just three singles from the over.

Ilyas Najib: The lack of IPL is clearly evident in the way Pakistan play, as the game evolves, Pakistan are stuck in the past.

  6. Pak 131-1 (Shehzad 63, Haris 59)published at 02:57 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

When was the last time you saw two bowlers operating in tandem with a combined age of 86? Probably on a village green rather than a one-day international? Mohammad Tauqir is more economical than his felloe 43-year-old Khurram Khan - five from the over means the skipper has 0-37 from eight overs.

    Andrew Samson
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

"This is the 10th century second wicket partnership in the tournament to date. There have been 25 all together and no other wicket has had more than five 100 partnerships. When today's partnership was 101, the average second-wicket partnership in the tournament was 57.44."

"It's quite an aggressive and good shot down the ground. Haris Sohail powered it down the ground and very easily over long-on."

  9. Six for Harispublished at 02:54 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

Many thanks, Adam. Yes, while Napier is indelibly linked with 1931 and the earthquake, for me McLean Park immediately takes me back to 2008 when I watched England come from behind to win the Test series 2-1.

That match featured an astonishing display of six-hitting by Tim Southee to delay England's victory - and Haris Sohail gets in the mood by lifting Khurram Khan over long-on for his first six of the innings.

"Tauqir's bowling well, he's getting a bit of purchase out of the pitch, which is uncommon here at McLean Park. Five off that over, the Pakistan batsmen are beginning to find the gaps, and if they can maintain that strike rate, they'll make a really good foundation for the hitters to come."

  11. 50 up for Haris Sohailpublished at 02:51 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

It's Haris Sohail's turn to reach a half century and in so doing, he brings up a 100 partnership for the second wicket too. More encouraging signs from these two. Over to Mark Mitchener now for the second half of this innings, who'll no doubt recall tales of his time watching an England Test victory on this ground with among others, my parents!

"Of the last 16 ODIs at Napier, 15 have seen the team batting first scoring at least 262. The only total lower than that was 230 (NZ v SA, 2012)."

  13. 50 up for Ahmed Shehzadpublished at 02:47 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

50 up for Ahmed Shehzad as he reaches his half century from 68 balls, including four fours and a six. He's of course had a couple of lives with those dropped catches earlier, but looking much more settled now. All very calm and sedate for this pair at the moment as they continue to tick the board over nicely.

"Pakistan have continued to maintain a steady approach here. UAE will be rueing those two dropped catches in the early overs, though they've got some fairly elderly blokes out there."

  15. Pak 102-1 (Shehzad 49, Haris 44)published at 02:44 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

Both batsman take advantage of the dual spin approach from UAE and swap their helmets for caps. Bit of a throwback move, but I like it. Up comes the 100 for Pakistan.

Y Sohail: I will not be surprised with Pakistan if they choose to bring back Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir when their ban ends. This Pakistan team is just embarrassing themselves.

Khurrum Khan is on to bowl with his slow left arm to give us spin from both ends - a first bowling appearance of this World Cup for Khurrum. Just the two from his first over as Pakistan close in on 100.

"From where we are at fine leg, that didn't look a bad shout, but it was 'umpire's call' on hitting the stumps. I don't think you'd have argued it it had been given out."

  19. Appeal - not outpublished at 02:39 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

Shehzad gets down to sweep Tauqir and there's interest in this from bowler and wicketkeeper for leg before. It looks close and they contemplate a review before deciding against it. Replays show "umpire's call" would've saved the batsman. Tauqir drops short and wide outside off and Shehzad cuts it away with ease for four to the point fence.

  20. Pak 89-1 (run rate 4.43)published at 02:36 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2015

Amjad Javed changes his angle of attack by coming round the wicket and it's a neat over as Haris Sohail decides to sit in for a few balls. The Hulk is back on the television screens once more and has been joined by some fellow fans in green since his earlier solo appearance.
