"I thought we had some nice entertainment and both sides got out of it what they wanted. James Anderson bowled well with the new ball and Eoin Morgan was attacking and proactive.

"The Bangladesh captain said he would have batted if he had won the toss and they wanted 275 which they got. England should be able to get them on this good batting pitch. But it's the psychological thing in the batsman's mind - they just need to go out with freedom and play properly."

And breathe. What do we make of that then? At 8-2, 275 looks a mile off for Bangladesh but they rallied really well, largely thanks to Mahmadullah. At one point, 300 looked on the cards, but a couple of late scalps swung things back England's way and they'll be happy with that all told. Time for the chase. And you can bet your bottom dollar it will be nervy one.

  3. Ban 275-5 (Mortaza 6, Sunny 3)published at 07:14 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2015

New man Arafat Sunny works one to fine leg and sets off on a rapid dart for two. Scrambled singles follow off the last two balls.

  4. Ban 271-7published at 07:12 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2015

Can Woakes follow Jordan's lead? Not really. Full, but not full enough and Mortaza clubs him down the ground for four.

"Chris Jordan deserve that wicket, he has set the example of how to bowl at the end of an innings. He bowled full, at the feet and cramped the batsman for room. You make it hard to score and then the wickets come."

Jordan is rewarded for an exceptional over with a wicket off the last ball. Sabbir Rahman's timing is off and Morgan takes a comfortable catch at long-on.

Great death bowling from Jordan. Inswinging yorkers served to order. Three dot balls. Gold dust at this stage.

"Mushfiqur played very well, and Bangladesh's captain said they wanted 275 after being put in by England. They will feel they have a chance now. I wouldn't be confident that Bangladesh's bowling is good enough to restrict England because this is a flat pitch with a short boundary and fast outfield..."

Broad strikes, for the first time since England's opening game, and it's the crucial scalp of Mushfiqur. He slices it high in the air and the safe hands of Chris Jordan do the rest.

  11. Ban 261-5published at 07:01 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2015

Here's Broad - who is in the middle of yet another off day. Not sure when his last "on" day was, mind you. Short, but not quick, and Mushfiqur dances down the track and pulls him into the stands for six.

  12. Postpublished at 06:58 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2015

Good shot, even better fielding by Root at mid-on. Mushfiqur has his eye on a hundred now - and he lashes a full ball from Jordan down the ground for four to move to 85. Still no really big, damaging overs from Bangladesh, but with three left, they should get to 280 here.

Prayags: Go Bangla Boys! Go! Whole of India wants to see you guys in QF.

Fi: We don't seem to get much better at this bowling lark. Teams aren't that scared of short & wide outside off.

Matthew Stone: England are the masters of failing in big events, it really doesn't matter what sport. Chokers.

"In the media centre, all the Bangladesh press and commentators were standing to applaud Mahmudullah's hundred. His innings might still take the Tigers to a total that knocks England out of this World Cup."

  15. Ban 243-5published at 06:52 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2015

Sabbir Rahman gets off the mark with two through fine leg and Anderson signs off with figures of 10-1-45-2. A smart set.

"Some teams have so much power and inventiveness in the final overs, they can murder you. The Bangladeshis, although they are batting well, don't seem to have the power to clear the boundary. I don't think they'll get 300 now."

  17. WICKETpublished at 06:50 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2015

Anderson it is for his last over - looks like they are definitely keeping Jordan for the death. Dab behind square from Mushfiqur, good fielding by Woakes and Mahmadullah is run out by a direct hit. Boy did England need that.

    Jonathan Agnew
    BBC Test Match Special

"These final overs, with just four men out, are a lottery for the bowlers. Eoin Morgan has a lot on his mind now, but he has to rely on James Anderson who has been here before and should know what lines to bowl."

  19. Ban 237-4 (partnership 138)published at 06:45 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2015

Before each over starts, Eoin Morgan has a chat with his bowler and tweaks his field. Chris Woakes is trying to bowl yorkers, wide of off stump, and the run-rate has temporarily stalled.

But as I type that, Mushfiqur gets down on one knee and middles the ball over mid-wicket for six. Great shot. England think they've got a wicket when a low full toss is smacked to Joe Root at long-on. But the umpire signals a no-ball. Criminal from the bowler.

Mahmudullah's century is Bangladesh's first in World Cup history - in their 30th match.

The teams who have played the most World Cup matches before a player scored a hundred:

    • 30 games: Bangladesh

    • 28 games: Sri Lanka

    • 12 games: Scotland

    • Kenya have played 29 World Cup matches without a century.
