  1. Aus 56-2 (Smith 18, Clarke 4)published at 04:22 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Spin from both ends now, with Senanayake back into the attack. It seems a good move on this slow, low wicket but both Michael Clarke and Steve Smith have wonderful footwork and technique against the slow bowlers - probably the best in this Australian team. The two batsmen just knock the ball into the gaps. They could play this in their sleep, four from the over.

"The wickets that are falling are not affecting the way Smith plays. His mindset controls what he can do."

  3. Aus 52-2 (Smith 16, Clarke 2)published at 04:19 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Prasanna appeals for leg-before against Michael Clarke, but the umpire Ian Gould is not giving that one out. In fact, Gould looks like he's feeling around for change in his pocket to see if he has enough for a vending machine chocolate bar at the interval. Just three singles from the over.

  5. Aus 49-2 (Smith 15, Clarke 0)published at 04:16 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Australia captains present and future at the crease. Steve Smith has become an absolute run machine these days and he drives Angelo Mathews down the ground with assured precision to pick up the second boundary of his embryonic innings. Another four is averted by Dilshan's fine diving stop at backward point, but there's nothing the close fielders can do about a cover drive which races away to the fence. Effortless, efficient and effective.

  6. Aus 41-2 (Smith 7, Clarke 0)published at 04:12 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

That wicket should settle Seekkuge Prasanna down. The 29-year-old betrayed his nerves when he bit his finger and then inhaled sharply before his over started. He's now bowling to Australia skipper Michael Clarke as the World Cup hosts look to rebuild.

"He had no idea, Aaron Finch. He didn't even have a chance to turn back, that's how far down the track he was. Sri Lanka may be limited in their attack - they don't have the bowlers who bowl at 140 or 150km per hour - but they are making life difficult out there."

  8. WICKETpublished at 04:09 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Inspired from Sri Lanka. They turn to leg-spinner Seekkuge Prasanna and it pays almost instant dividends when Aaron Finch comes down the pitch to a deliberate leg-side delivery and misses. Kumar Sangakkara casually whips off the bails and Finch is two steps closer to the dressing room.

"The Napier crowd have been silenced by Shapoor Zadran as he get rid of fan favourite Kane Williamson. With the boundaries having dried up, even singles are being applauded now.

"It's not the pace of chase many were hoping for and there are continuous attempts to get a Mexican wave going but with the long distances between the stands, it continues to be a hard feat to complete."

  10. Aus 37-1 (Finch 20, Smith 7)published at 04:06 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

So, Smith continues on his merry way. Just three from the skipper's tidy first over.

  12. Not outpublished at 04:05 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Smith is hit on the back pad but the third umpire decides the batsman hit the ball. We'll never know if it was going on to hit the stumps.

  13. Umpire reviewpublished at 04:03 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

The early experiment with spin is shelved by Sri Lanka and skipper Angelo Mathews brings himself into the attack. Aaron Finch drives three down the pitch to get Steve Smith on strike and the Sri Lankan's appeal for a strong leg-before when the ball ducks back into the right-hander. Not out, but they are going to review...

"Sri Lanka will be happy with that start. I think they'd take that, with Warner out of the way. When Finch and Warner get going against that new ball, they can be going at eight or nine an over."

  15. Aus 34-1 (Finch 17, Smith 7)published at 04:00 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Steve Smith is quickly developing into the most correct of batsmen, if a little eccentric. Yet he has a more than decent ODI strike-rate of 89, partly due to his dashing early days when he was more of an end-of-innings blaster. In short, he's now the complete package. He takes just two from Lasith Malinga's latest over.

  16. Aus 32-1 (Finch 17, Smith 5)published at 03:55 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Aaron Finch is clearly being restrained against the spin bowling of Senanayake. Between deliveries, he offers a clue of his focus by patting down the pitch and taking his time to take guard. It's very measured and deliberate. As are the two shots he plays either side of the wicket - both off the back foot, a sweep goes for four and a cut brings three.

  17. New Zealand v Afghanistan latestpublished at 03:53 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

A minor setback for New Zealand. Kane Williamson blows a golden chance of a decent score, slicing off the top of his bat to Samiullah Shenwari who is lurking at midwicket. Ross Taylor, celebrating his 31st birthday today, trots out to the middle as the Black Caps aim to wrap up a routine victory without too much more damage.

  18. Aus 24-1 (Finch 10, Smith 4)published at 03:52 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

It's a measure of Steve Smith's status that he is now regarded as Australia's best batsman. By me, anyway. In at number three, the right-hander is the glue which will hold the batting order together. He doesn't seem fazed by Malinga and his mane, middling the ball straight away as he unfurls the most beautiful of cover drives to the fence.

"That's just beautifully bowled. It's one of the skills that Malinga has - he cut the fingers underneath it. It's very hard for the batsman to pick it up out of the hand. Warner was deceived, went hard at it, then played a defensive shot. That's just a gorgeous piece of limited-overs bowling from a veteran and a master."

  20. WICKETpublished at 03:47 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Lovely stuff, Lasith. The Sri Lankan magician sends down a heat-seeking yorker which David Warner digs out. He then slows it down for the next delivery and the left-handed batsman is deceived - popping up a simple catch to short cover. Lasith Malinga celebrates with a fist pump.
