New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum on losing the toss and being told to field: "We would have batted first but it was not to be. It means we get to work with the ball in hand and hopefully give us a decent target to chase down later on."

On last weekend's one-wicket win against Australia: "It was a fantastic spectacle for everyone and a hell of a game to be involved in. But attentions turn to today and we respect the challenge that Afghanistan will present us."

On selection dilemmas after naming the same XI: "It is tough on the guys who are missing out, but while they have not had an impact on the field yet, we have got guys who will deliver if needed. We have got some nice combinations going and it is a nice problem to have."

And a quick note on Afghanistan - if they lose today, they will join Scotland, the UAE and Zimbabwe in being mathematically eliminated from quarter-final contention.

  3. Captain's viewpublished at 21:39 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Afghanistan skipper Mohammad Nabi on winning the toss and deciding to bat first: "It is a good wicket, we will try our best to put a good score on the board."

On his side's World Cup experience: "It has been an exciting tournament for us. After every single match we have had to travel the next day. It is hard to adjust with the jet lag - it's hard but good."

There are going to be few people arguing with New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum when he states that the current Kiwi XI is the strongest they have at their disposal. McCullum had already revealed that the unbeaten co-hosts will be unchanged for their encounter with Afghanistan, ignoring the opportunity to give some of their other four squad players some game time.

"We've settled on this as our number one team at this point, but I'm confident if injuries do come about we've got the experience and personnel on the sideline that can step up and perform a role," said McCullum.

If you're not aware, not only are New Zealand into the quarter-finals, they also know their venue in the last eight - they will be playing at home, in Wellington - but their opponent will depend on where they finish in the table. If they win the group, they will play the team fourth in Group B.

"The match will be Afghanistan's 50th ODI. Captain Mohammad Nabi has played in all their matches to date, and becomes the first player to appear in each of his team's first 50 ODIs for any team."
