  1. Aus 19-0 (Finch 10, Warner 9)published at 03:45 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

David Warner doesn't give any bowler the time of day, least of all a slow bowler who is opening with the new nut. The stocky left-hander is quick on his feet to get inside out and crash Senanayake through the off side for four. No inch given, no quarter expected.

  2. Aus 13-0 (Finch 9, Warner 4)published at 03:43 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Lasith Malinga kisses the ball before sending down each delivery. Aaron Finch is not as gentle with the round leather though... hammering it through the covers for four when the bowler over pitches. The outfield is like lightning today - in horse racing parlance, it's good to soft.

  3. New Zealand v Afghanistan latestpublished at 03:40 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

A huge cheer goes around McLean Park as New Zealand cruise past the 100 mark in their chase. The unbeaten hosts, thanks to cavalier captain Brendon McCullum, smashed their first 50 off just 34 balls, but the more patient Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill need another 65 balls to reach three figures.

  4. Aus 8-0 (Finch 4, Warner 4)published at 03:38 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

The SCG has always been kind to spinners, and Sri Lanka test out the surface early on with offie Sachithra Senanayake. There's a slip and a man under the helmet, but David Warner is unperturbed and gets an early single. Aaron Finch looks less comfortable and gloves a difficult chance behind but the ball drops at the feet of Kumar Sangakkara who is standing up to the bowling.

  5. Aus 4-0 (Australia won toss)published at 03:34 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Oh dear. If only Mahela Jaywardene hadn't cut his fingernails ahead of the match. Or Angelo Mathews had positioned a second slip.

Aaron Finch edges the second ball he faces to slip but Mahela Jayawardene just can't get there as he dives to his right at first grab. Good effort by the former captain, he is blameless really. Lasith Malinga is hooping the ball about on this breezy Sydney afternoon and it's just four from the opening over.

Is there a more muscular, aggressive opening partnership than Aaron Finch and David Warner? Those boys are intimidating with willow in hand. Anyway, we're ready to go.

The World Cup trophy glistens in the Sydney sunshine. Sri Lanka's fielders gather for a huddle, while David Warner and Aaron Finch get padded up and ready for battle.

Those Aussies have a point to prove after losing to New Zealand last week. A thumping victory over Sri Lanka would help things.

Thanks JJ. So, New Zealand continue to serenely coast through the tournament. But who will win in the clash of the big boys: Australia and Sri Lanka? We're just having the national anthems in Sydney now - Sri Lanka's is my favourite of the tournament. Belting tune, if not a little long.

As Afghanistan bowler Dawlat Zadran limits New Zealand to just a single in the 14th over, it is time to hand over to my colleague Marc Higginson. He is striding out of the BBC pavilion with keyboard in hand to talk you through Australia v Sri Lanka. Of course, I'll still be providing the odd update to inform you of New Zealand's progress towards an inevitable victory...

"Shihkar Dhawan has turned up in Napier to enjoy the cricket and perhaps scout potentially semi-final opposition? The India opener is due to play for his country against Ireland in Hamilton on Tuesday. If the 29-year-old had an ego, it was certainly taken down a peg or two as he had to be introduced to those he's going to be spending the afternoon with. If I was introducing him I might have likened him to Dick Dastardly with a moustache as wicked as his."

"Kane Williamson's reputation is legendary. For years, people were talking about this kid who had unbelievable talent. He has been scoring records since he was eight or nine. There are not many schoolboy records that he doesn't hold."

  13. NZ 85-1 (Guptill 25, Williamson 16)published at 03:22 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

This New Zealand innings is missing the explosive scoring of Brendon McCullum, but this pair are ticking along nicely. Both will fancy their chances of racking up a decent score against a blunt attack on a flat wicket.

"The crowd has considerably quietened since star batsman McCullum departed but the DJ is looking to get spectators back in the party mood by playing a chorus of Bobby Cliff's 'Dreadlock Holiday', also known as 'I don't like cricket, I love it.'

"It worked and along with a fan drum interlude plus the light breeze that has just arrived, the crowd have perked back up after lunch. A few more people have ventured along to see the Black Caps bat in the afternoon sunshine."

  15. NZ 81-1 (target 187)published at 03:18 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

The New Zealand boys look very relaxed on the players' balcony, laughing and joking as they watch Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson edge them closer to their target. They could only look more relaxed if they had a ice-cream cone each in their hand. Guptill pulls and nudges a couple of singles, with Williamson prodding another one in-between.

  17. NZ 78-1published at 03:13 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Kane Williamson follows his partner's lead, going on the attack against left-arm quickie Shapoor Zadran. He slashes the opening delivery through point to the boundary, before driving the next ball to the rope. This pair are going through the gears nicely now.
