"In Haddin you are looking at player coming in at eight who has opened often in one-day cricket. That is the strength of the teams who will end up in the semi-finals or the final - they have that depth. Haddin is a sensible player who knows what shots are on - it is not just indiscriminate swiping."

  2. Aus 363-6published at 07:03 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Australia won't be getting 400 now, but they might reach 375 - certainly if Brad Haddin continues to cream sixes over extra cover like he does to the first ball of Thisara Perera's over. A fielding mistake inside the ring then sees the ball run underneath Angelo Mathews at cover and go for four. Next ball? Four over mid-off. Three in a row.

Former West Indies batsman Brian Lara: Glenn Maxwell. Well played, a joy to watch!! Now I have problems finding the right superlatives to describe your great innings.

  4. Aus 346-6 (Malinga 10-0-59-2)published at 07:00 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

The SCG has come alive in the last 15 overs or so. The Australians are chatting, the Sri Lankans blowing horns and whistles and it's creating a cracking din inside the stadium. Lasith Malinga again bowls a tight over, finishing his allotted 10 by conceding just four singles. His final figures of 2-59 are the new 2-40.

  5. Aus 345-6 (Watson 64, Haddin 0)published at 06:55 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Thisara Perera is bowling some decent stuff now, returning to wide yorkers. Shane Watson almost falls over in crashing one such delivery to the off-side boundary. He's been joined at the crease by Brad Haddin, another big striker of a cricket ball.

"There was never a run there unless the fielding was poor. You are throwing away the wicket of one your excellent lower-order batsmen. Faulkner is a batsman who could have scored 50 off 20 balls for you."

Thanks for stopping by, James. Australia's self-styled finisher won't be closing anything down today as he is run out going for a single to cover. Turn off the light on your way out.

"Astonishing stuff - I thought Australia may be headed for 260 or 270 at one stage. Now they are looking at 400. But the way to get wickets now seems to be to bowl high full tosses, which is just not cricket."

  12. 100 for Glenn Maxwellpublished at 06:44 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

What an innings from Glenn Maxwell. He reaches his first ODI century with his signature shot, a lofted cover drive which brings two. He celebrates by hitting fresh air with his bat, removing his helmet and hugging Shane Watson.

  13. 50 for Shane Watsonpublished at 06:43 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

The recalled Shane Watson sweep Prasanna for four and then smears another boundary down the ground to bring up his 32nd ODI half-century off 30 balls. A great riposte to being dropped for the last game.

  14. Aus 321-4 (Maxwell 99 off 50)published at 06:40 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Just six from the over from Lasith Malinga, who has checked a rampant Australia momentarily.

  15. Aus 320-4published at 06:39 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Glenn Maxwell won't be breaking Kevin O'Brien's record. He runs through for a leg-bye, after the umpire appears to ask if he hit it or not! Good honesty, Glenn.

  16. Aus 318-4published at 06:38 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Glenn Maxwell hits Lasith Malinga for two, then takes a single... but it's not enough and he misses the chance to beat the record for the fastest World Cup century. He can still equal it with a single off his next ball though.

"That would have been a career-best catch from Sangakkara. He ran back 25m, maybe 30m, got the hands there but the ball clunked out."

  18. Aus 315-4 (Maxwell 96, Watson 42)published at 06:35 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2015

Don't rule out Australia getting 400 here. Angelo Mathews is the latest player to be blasted for six by Shane Watson, who then gives himself room to power a single to the off-side boundary rider.

Over to Glenn Maxwell, who smashes four through the covers and is then dropped by Kumar Sangakkara when he gets a top edge and the keeper runs back 20 yards before shelling the catch over his shoulder. Big, big miss. The all-rounder needs four off two balls to record the fastest World Cup hundred.

"It will be fascinating to see how Maxwell evolves - maybe like David Warner, a one-day cricketer who became a darn good Test cricketer. Maybe Maxwell could transform the way people play Test cricket."

"This is where you need the ball to reverse swing. Someone tried to convince me that the two new ball rule was brought in for the bowlers - it wasn't, it was brought in for the batsmen."
