Eoin Morgan on his future as England captain: "My experience as captain has made me a better player and better person and I've learnt a lot about the team and my own performance.

"There will be a review from here so, with regards the captaincy, the decision is out of my hands."

  4. Central contracts for ODI players?published at 11:41 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

England captain Eoin Morgan on central contracts for England one-day players: "They have probably improved us as a Test nation, so if they did the same for one-day cricket, it would be well received."

On introducing franchises for T20 domestic cricket: "I'm a huge fans of the IPL and the Big Bash. One thing it does do is take you out of your comfort zone - you play under huge pressure, in front of huge crowds and against international quality bowling."

  5. Captain's viewpublished at 11:39 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

England captain Eoin Morgan tells Sky Sports: "There have been some difficult lessons - things like building innings, building pressure with the ball - things like that have let us down.

"We made the same mistakes we have been doing for quite a while now. We haven't had a run of form as a team.

"Throughout this tournament we haven't gelled as a side. We have got on well together but we haven't managed to string tow performances together."

"There has to be a change in direction. Test match cricket has to remain a priority. But there has to be ca change because we haven't had success at World Cups."

"England don't have an AB de Villiers... he's a freak. But we do have Jos Buttler and Alex Hales who weren't used properly in this tournament."

Yvonne: England should employ Gary Kirsten as head coach (look how he lifted the Proteas and India) and also a motivational speaker as the Black Caps did. That should put the Aussies in their place.

"We need the Stokes, Billings and Hales of this world to come into the team. I like the look of Moeen Ali, but there's not many spinners either. To become a really good team, England need to find some high-class bowlers. If James Anderson falls over and gets injured, I worry for England in the Ashes. Who is going to hold up an end, never mind roll over the Aussies?"

Nigel in Leeds: England need to be slightly careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water at the end of the World Cup. It's the end of the road for Anderson, Bell, Bopara, Tredwell, Ballance and Morgan, with others such as Finn and Woakes having huge question marks over their future but fans should look at each player individually, not as a whole. Let's not forget Root was nearly dropped from all formats last summer. He's my captain for 2019 at the minute.

  10. Captain's viewpublished at 11:29 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

England captain Eoin Morgan: "We have learnt a lot from this tournament but it's nice to finish on a win. We've got a good squad of players here and it's important to realise we haven't clicked in this tournament. It's been challenging, I've learnt a lot about myself, the other players and I've learnt from Peter Moores. I've spent more time with him, and I've enjoyed that. The hunger is still there to be captain."

Much of this post-mortem is picking over the shell that is the England side. However, we must all take time to say a fond farewell to Afghanistan, who brought plenty of spirit and joy to this tournament. Their win over Scotland was one of the reasons why this is shaping up to be one of the finest of World Cups. So farewell Rambo, Shapoor, Andy Moles and the rest of his men, you've been a fine advert for the associate nations.

"The bowling stock worries me. Look at Australia, they look to have more than us. We have 18 counties, we have academies, but where is our bowling stock? Where is the pace? Why aren't we producing fast bowlers? You can only win a certain amount of games without pace bowlers.

"I'd go with a younger set of players now. We have to somehow try and catch up with the rest of the world and how they play the game. It might have to get worse before it gets better. Look at Ian Bell, he's averaged 52 in this tournament at a strike-rate of 77 but I don't think he's influenced games."

Paul H from London: "It's very frustrating reading all the positive comments about Bell when he is prodding the ball around for ones and twos. It's that mind-set that will prevent England from ever making the changes necessary to reform their style of play. We need to give big hitters like Hales and Ali the freedom to express themselves. Going at six an over will never win the World Cup."

Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi: "England bowled brilliantly, in the right areas and swinging it both ways.

"We have learned a lot - we have played against full members and seen how can they play, how can they build pressure."

On beating Scotland earlier in the tournament: "That was a great memory for us, our first victory in the World Cup."

  15. Text 81111published at 11:20 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

Mark: At least England will win their last World Cup game. Only one other country will probably be able to say that come the end of the tournament...

Afghanistan coach Andy Moles: "We are disappointed with the loss today but overall we've won some friends across the world by the way we have played our cricket. We are happy to put a different face on Afghanistan to the war-torn country.

"We need to show more character. We will review the tournament. Our next games are in Scotland and before then we will go through the footage and prepare to bat for longer periods. At the moment we live on a diet of Twenty20 games and we are struggling with the longer game.

"We will only get better by playing more full members. We are all clamouring to get a chair at the table. Hopefully we will be given a chance and will keep learning from these opportunities. We live in hope that somebody might hear our pleas."

Man of the match Chris Jordan, who took 2-13 for England: "It's nice to pick up this award. It swung around and Jimmy and Broady set the tone, so I'm grateful.

"I've not got the best memories of this World Cup. But any time you put on an England shirt you've got to enjoy it. Hopefully we can come back stronger next time."

"The banana skin was always a worry today but there's a bigger picture and structurally the game needs to change at home. We need a blank piece of paper: how can we get better moving forward? Are we producing enough high-quality players? Is our system allowing that? I'd say no."

Darren in south Wales: Why is it that England always take the maximum amount of time to chase a score? If this was one of the big teams (Australia, New Zealand, South Africa) the teams would already be back in the changing rooms by now. It doesn't count for much now but surely coming out and blasting that total away in 10-12 overs would make the future look so much better.

So, England finish with four points from their six Pool A fixtures. They beat the two teams that finished below them (both associate nations: Scotland and Afghanistan) and lost to the four teams above them: Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. I'll leave you to apply your own descriptive summary to that. I imagine we'll be unable to repeat most of them.
