"England were always going to do the job. The conditions today summed up England's one-day cricket. When the ball swings and nips around, England look good. But it doesn't happen that often abroad and you need more mystery, pace and invention."

  2. ENGLAND WIN BY 9 WICKETS (D/L)published at 11:08 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

Bell claims the winning run. The celebrations are very muted. This has been a resounding win, but it is the thinnest silver lining attached to the biggest, darkest cloud.

Allan S Schoenherr: For once Geoffrey I disagree, we cannot drop Ballance he was magnificent at three last year, and has Trott done enough?

"Jonathan Trott should bat at number three in the Test team, he's played better over a longer period than Gary Ballance. He needs to get back into the team in his own position. It will be a big thing for him."

  7. 50 for Bellpublished at 11:01 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

Shapoor comes running in from Brisbane and Taylor is fooled by the pace of the delivery with a swing way before the ball reaches him. He was so early he could have had another go. Another single gives strike to Bell, who purposefully slices a ball over the slips for four. A single brings Bell his 50. Four more for victory.

"I think James Taylor might get a trip to the West Indies for the three-Test series over there. We've got to have a look at him. There's a lot of good judges saying they like the look of him and he's scored a lot of runs in the county cricket. I'd take Jonathan Trott too. If he's OK, he's got to play."

  9. Eng 91-1 (Target 101)published at 10:54 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

A single to Bell, two scurried runs from Taylor and a wide down leg from Hassan moves England to within two big hits of victory.

"This has been a protracted match which has limped to its inevitable conclusion. There's 9,000 inside the SCG for this one, which I find quite surprising."

Everything Sport: England's treatment of Finn has been poor. Why not play him in a game where he could get a few wickets and confidence?

  12. Eng 87-1published at 10:50 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2015

Bell and Taylor show some nice invention with a couple of paddles to fine leg to collect a run apiece off Nabi. Looks like England are going to ease gently to victory.

Dave in Birmingham: Even if Bell does well today then it will be qualified with "it's only Afghanistan" and "there was no pressure as England were already out of the WC". The many times he has done the business in pressure situations is just forgotten and the old stuff trotted out! All good players have changing fortunes.

Ian White: Aus/NZ/SA would knock this total off in 10 overs max. England poodling along at 6 an over.

Hassan finishes his over well, conceding just one run, which gets Taylor off the mark. I think I speak for everyone when I say I just want this game to be over now.

Hales goes, and it is a tame dismissal. he looks to be trying to guide a length ball from Hassan down to third man but instead feathers an edge to the keeper. In comes James Taylor.
