"Just when you were thinking it could be an Australian procession, Stuart Broad produces two absolute rozzers in successive balls.

"The huge cheer from the bottom tier of the Great Southern Stand that greeted the Watson wicket in particular tells us that there are more than enough England supporters to make this a fair fight.

"Every time a boundary is hit or a wicket falls, great jets of fire shoot from behind the sightscreen, with the heat carrying all the way up to the commentary box. If it carries on like this, we'll have scorched eyebrows."

The MCG really is massive. There's close to 100,000 people packed into the cavernous bowl, while the outfield appears much larger than most and is helpful to the batsman as they look to pick up ones and twos into the gaps. A couple of bouncers to end the over - the second one not being called a wide after the first had been registered as the one for the over by the ump. Cue pantomime booes.

Advantage New Zealand in Christchurch. Lahiru Thirimanne lost his off stump to Trent Boult for 65, Mahela Jayawardene was caught behind off Daniel Vettori for a duck, and Kumar Sangakkara has just fallen lbw to Boult for 39 - not even the DRS could save Sanga. Two new batsmen in - Dimuth Karunaratne (6) and skipper Angelo Mathews (11).

Chris Woakes is brought into the attack by skipper Eoin Morgan. A few steady outswingers, with the Australian batsmen happy to take stock for now. England need to get Steve Smith early though, because the right-hander is in the form of his life. Three from the over.

Van Hunks: Now that was stupid of Watson. At almost eight runs to the over, he could have eased his way in for two or three balls.

Ben Youngs: Not really rocket science is it Broad, pitch the ball up and you get wickets.

Jay: Still don't agree with England's strategy of lulling Aus into a false sense of security by dropping catches and missing run outs.

England appeal for caught behind when Steve Smith goes for a wild hook, but the umpire is unmoved. This World Cup Pool A opener has caught fire now.

Stuart Broad roars in for his hat-trick ball and delivers the perfect inswinging yorker but Steve Smith does enough to dig it out. Good cricket by both men.

Ready for the hat-trick ball? Steve Smith needs to be.

"How the game changes in a blink of an eye. All a sudden, back-to-back wickets and momentum changes completely. Great ball to get first up as a batsman. Some days you miss them, others days they catch the edge."

Stuart Broad is on a hat-trick. Shane Watson stands back in his crease, pokes his bat out and edges behind to Jos Buttler. The MCG is momentarily silenced before the England supporters strike up in celebration. The pendulum swings.

Got him! A bit of magic from Stuart Broad as he pitches one on the right length and it moves back in just enough to defeat the left-handed David Warner and rearrange the robust opener's timbers.

Should Eoin Morgan be thinking about a bowling change here? It's obviously not working at the moment as Australia bring up the 50 with another four for Aaron Finch.

George Carter: They aren't easy catches but you need to make them to win a World Cup.

Rob Stileman: Decided to stay up for the England game. Already regretting it! Woeful start

Ayelet H Lushkov: I realise that there are new ODI rules for this World Cup, but the basic idea is still to catch the ball, right?

  16. Aus 47-0 (Warner 18, Finch 27)published at 03:59 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2015

Stuart Broad has had the clippers out since the English summer: he's sporting a receding hairline and a 'number one all over'. The big paceman grimaces as David Warner slips turning back from an attempted single and is close to being run out - if Anderson had gathered the ball running in from short mid-wicket. Six more to the score.

  17. Aus 41-0 (Warner 15, Finch 25)published at 03:53 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2015

James Anderson v Aaron Finch: England v Australia, Lancashire v Yorkshire. And the Aussie white rose is prevailing at the moment, as the burly Finch drives a boundary straight down the ground, then dismissively turns his back on the ball as it races along the lush green turf. A two, wide and three later, Warner clubs a lofted drive through the hands of Moeen Ali at mid-off, then middles another through the same area. Two fours. Aussies motoring.

  19. Aus 23-0 (Broad 2-0-18-0)published at 03:48 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2015

Here we go. A gum-chewing Aaron Finch decides enough is enough and belts Stuart Broad back down the ground for four, then pulls three into the leg side. David Warner also eases three into the wide open spaces of the on-side, then Finch pulls a short ball for another boundary. Poor stuff from Broad.
