  2. Boycott got it wrongpublished at 03:22 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2015

    Michael Vaughan
    Ex-England captain

"I never had anything like this a few days before a tournament. I didn't have to cope with that. I don't agree with Geoffrey Boycott, he has every right to have an opinion on Morgan's play. He has scored runs against quality teams, he is just out of nick.

"I have never heard Eoin Morgan say he is a great player, but any player who plays at the top needs to have confidence. The team will be disappointed to hear comments like that. You have to deal with it, Geoffrey is paid to give an opinion.

"The strong teams and individuals realise you can't control what others are going to say. You just get on and play. Your job is to face the ball. A word and headline shouldn't affect that. We will see if Morgan is strong enough."

England's build-up to the World Cup seemed to be much more settled than usual. They changed skipper and all appeared to be going well as they reached the final of the Tri-series in Australia. There was plenty of cause for optimism... then we went and put Geoffrey Boycott in front of a microphone...

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live about captain Eoin Morgan, Boycs said: "I don't think he's as good as he thinks he is, and I don't think he's as good as some people say he is."

    Agree or disagree?

    Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"England's prospects are good I believe. The weather has become quite muggy, quite heavy and that should suit the swing bowlers James Anderson and Chris Woakes and I believe that could be the difference in the game.

"I believe the match will be won and lost by the top four batters for either side. If Australia get off to a good start and a couple of guys get in Finch and Warner then they could set a formidable total. For England they need a rock at the top they need James Taylor to bat through and if Moeen Ali gets going then I think the 90,000 Aussies are going to be in for a treat"

"The intimidating atmosphere is talked about a lot. But even though you won't believe me you don't feel it once you get on the field. There are that many people the sound almost takes a second's delay to get to you. It's not actually as bad as playing in front of nine mums or dads, believe it or not."

Australia captain George Bailey: "I'm happy, I would have batted first. It looks like a great wicket. Hopefully we can bat well and put some pressure on England."

  12. Captain's viewpublished at 03:08 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2015

England captain Eoin Morgan, asked whether England are intimidated: "Absolutely not. Everybody in the squad has been excited about this game for some time now.

"It looks a really good pitch. Maybe there's a little bit of moisture underneath."

On Gary Ballance's inclusion at the expense of Ravi Bopara: "We've gone for the extra batter."

There was a bit of theatre about the toss. Television's Michael Atherton walked both captains to the middle, where they handed in a scrap of paper containing the teams (hi-tech stuff) and then examined a specially minted coin. Match referee Jeff Crowe gave the television cameras an awkward 10-second look at the coin, and off we went.

"The fact that the MCG is walking distance from the city makes for quite an atmosphere on the way to the ground. All manner of Australian shirts, plenty of the 1992 vintage, but a smattering of English too - I've spotted both Brighton and Sheffield Wednesday tops. Kids asking dad for a programme, painted faces, a busker doing good trade by playing Waltzing Matilda over and over on his trumpet. More like a rock concert than a cricket match."

  15. Tosspublished at 03:05 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2015

First of all, let me tell you about the toss. England captain Eoin Morgan called correctly and chose to bowl first. And some quick team news to bring you... Ravi Bopara has been dropped and Gary Ballance is in to strengthen the batting. Josh Hazlewood is included for Australia.

22-year-old Adam Milne, who can seriously crank it up speed-wise, is into the attack. He hurries Dilshan with his very first ball, taking the shoulder of the bat. His second delivery is clocked at 93 mph. Woof. Dilshan works one through midwicket for two, bit otherwise it's an excellent over from the youngster.

  20. Postpublished at 02:58 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2015

Dilshan, who had his ankle taped during the warm-up, just looks a touch forlorn as he mistimes another shot. He's also being frustrated by some good fielding in the ring by the Kiwis. Thirimanne has a wild swing at Southee, but he plays a much classier stroke next ball, easing one through third man for four.
