This is a much better over for Sri Lanka. Thirimanne eases Boult through the covers for four, so the bowler drops his length short and Thirimanne pulls from in front of his eyes for another four. Great batting. New Zealand were 68-0 at this stage.

"It just didn't feel right, that shout. The only question was whether there was an inside edge onto the thigh pad... and there's nothing on Snicko. In terms of technology, there's no HotSpot in this World Cup, but they are using Snicko."

Tim Southee will be disgusted with that. He's had Tillakaratne Dilshan bewitched, bothered and bewildered so far but he lets him off the ropes with a loose delivery that sits up and allows Dilshan to pull to the mid-wicket fence. Now though, has Southee got his man? He sends down an absolute jaffa which cuts Dilshan in half on its way through to the keeper - there's a noise, but umpire Nigel Llong decides it's not bat (correctly) and the batsman survives.

The pressure valve is released as Lahiru Thirimanne gets one through the covers with a classical off-drive for four. Boult then switches round the wicket and almost has his revenge with an absolute rozzer which flirts with Dilshan's outside edge.

"Dilshan's vastly experienced, but you can see a degree of frustration that's visible, as he's being tied down by Southee."

New Zealand are renowned for their livewire brilliance in the field, and Brendon McCullum keeps the pressure on Tillakaratne Dilshan with a super stop in the covers. Tim Southee has got Dilshan in a straitjacket at the moment. Just two singles from that over.

"You can see a difference in attitude and pace from the Kiwis, running in compared to how Malinga and the others were at the start of the match. There's a lot of intent from Boult."

Another really good over for New Zealand as Trent Boult restricts Sri Lanka to two singles from his second over. Dilshan, wearing his trademark bandana, is visibly itching to cut loose, but he can't find the middle of the bat as yet.

Paul Barker:, external An almost perfect innings by New Zealand - everyone contributed and the finish superb, and of late, typical. A real Cup threat.

Dilshan is going very hard at the ball here, but he's not making much of an impression on Tim Southee's bowling. The Kiwi seamer is getting good pace and eluding the wild thrashes of the Sri Lanka opener so far. An excellent maiden for Southee.

Lahiru Thirimanne pockets a four off Trent Boult's opening delivery thanks in part to some sloppy work from Martin Guptill on the rope at point. Then Dilshan gets a bit lucky when a streaky under-edge fails to disturb the timbers and races to the fence. A good over for Sri Lanka - they need plenty more of those.

Tim Southee opens up for New Zealand as usual, and immediately finds a bit of swing and shape. Stout and sturdy defence from Lahiru Thirimanne, before Dilshan turns one off his pads for two.

"This is the fourth consecutive ODI in which they have batted first that NZ have reached 300 - the first time they have done this. The world record for consecutive 300+ scores batting first is seven by Australia in 2007."

Right, Lahiru Thirimanne and Tillakaratne Dilshan are striding out to the middle, Tim Southee has the cherry. We're ready to get back underway in Christchurch.

"I never got intimidated here - the Gabba at Brisbane is much more raucous. I played in the Test where we had Australia 90-9 at lunch, and I never felt the atmosphere was that intimidating. Eoin Morgan said yesterday, it's not that big a deal, and I genuinely would be surprised if it swallows people up like it did in Aggers' day."
