The runs aren't quite flowing for Kane Williamson at the moment, but he looks determined to ride out these sticky middle overs. He chips Herath over extra cover for two and pinches another single down to long on.

"Steady rain again in Melbourne. Though we're the best part of four hours away from the scheduled start, you can't help but think the chances of a delay/reduced game are increasing."

This surface hasn't offered much for Suranga Lakmal to work with, but his consistent line and length have really helped him to apply the tourniquet to this New Zealand innings. His latest over costs just three singles, and this game is evenly poised at the halfway stage in the first innings.

"Herath is not what you would call a multi-dimensional cricketer. All he can do is bowl left-arm spin. He does it with no doosra or mystery ball. He can't run, he's probably the slowest in the outfield at this tournament. He bats perkily at number 10. But he can bowl very well."

Williamson loosens the shackles with a clever shovel-sweep into the vacant cow-corner area. Five off another decent over from Herath.

"Guptill just tried to be a bit too cute there, he opened the face, but that little bit of extra pace gave Sangakkara the chance to take the catch. Lakmal has bowled pretty well, he had the treat of not being asked to bowl to McCullum. The run rate is still pretty strong, but at least Sri Lanka are still in the game."

The Sri Lanka fightback gathers pace. Suranga Lakmal has bowled well and he gets rid of Martin Guptill, drawing a thick outside edge that Kumar Sangakkara clutches safely.

Jeevan Mendis, who took that excellent catch, comes into the attack to bowl his leg-spin. Martin Guptill is looking a little more circumspect since the loss of his opening partner. Four singles from the over. New Zealand's run rate, having been above eight, is now only just north of six.

David, Spain: McCullum will be disappointed by that. He was out to knock the stuffing out of SL - and send a clear statement of intent to other teams. Valiant effort, though and he's helped NZ kick-start the tournament.

Suranga Lakmal has made a real impact since he came into the attack. He's generally bowled a very canny off-stump line. He restricts New Zealand to one off another useful over.

Big shout for lbw against Martin Guptill as Herath gets one to grip and beat the blade, but Nigel Llong says no - perhaps it just struck him a little high on the pad. Five runs from the rest of the over.

Kane Williamson has been in supreme form of late but he does look a little nervy here. He looks like he needs a streaky boundary to get in the flow, and he gets one when he under-edges Lakmal past Sangakkara for four.

Ben Clarke: Have timed my paternity leave well as putting my one-week-old down for the night and fully expecting her to be up again for England.

Andrew Pym: Is it just me or does Martin Guptill look uncannily like Michael Atherton? Maybe it's that nervous look he's got. Like he's scared Allan Donald will be brought on to bowl next.

Suranga Lakmal is into the attack, and the lanky paceman almost makes an immediate impact. He induces Williamson to nibble lazily at one outside off, but Sangakkara can't hang on as he tumbles to his right. How costly might that prove? Williamson isn't in the mood to make him pay immediately, just taking a single from the remaining deliveries. A very good start by one of the less heralded members of Sri Lanka's attack.
