Oh, Christopher. A snapshot of Jordan's bowling career as he defeats the edge of Brathwaite's bat with an absolute snorter which just leaves him with late away-nip, then next ball serves up some absolute garbage which Brathwaite lashes through the off-side. Drinks.

Jordan can tend to serve up a rather mixed bag of deliveries, and he ruins a good over here, by chucking in a horrible short and wide ball, which Brathwaite laces behind point for four.

Stuart Field: Does Broad only get a place now because he's T20 captain? No batting confidence, average bowling! #nowgetafivefor

Thomas Hammond: If professional sportsmen get demoralised by not being picked, they should try a new career. Defiant mentality is what's needed.

"Looking at the clouds, and the wind, you'd think any outswing bowler would want to bowl at the other end to which Anderson's bowling."

Graeme Swann adds: "I always thought Jimmy bowled at the wrong end. But who are we to question him as he's taken all these wickets! I always used to think he should bowl at the Nursery End and use the slope for the outswinger, but he preferred the Pavilion End."

  9. WI 25-1published at 18:27 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

Jimmy Anderson's arms are briefly aloft as he raps Darren Bravo on the pads, but he swung that too sharply, and Hawk-Eye shows the ball would have slid down the leg-side. Bravo, looking to see off the threat of Anderson, plays out a maiden.

"Darren Bravo is like a carbon copy of Brian Lara when he's batting, for instance the way he plays that flick off his toes. What the West Indies would give for someone with half the output of Lara in this team now."

  11. WI 25-1 (Brathwaite 9*, Bravo 5*)published at 18:24 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

Chris Jordan has a muscular, powerful frame but a somewhat idiosynratic run-up - he pounds in with short, strangely effortful steps, like a thoroughbred racehorse tramping over a bouncy castle. Bravo, often likened to his cousin Brian Lara in his technique, opens his account with a dismissive, almost haughty flick to the square-leg boundary.

  12. KP comeback hit by injurypublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

Some news from the Parks: Kevin Pietersen's county comeback for Surrey against Oxford University has ended early after he appeared to hurt his hand attempting to take a catch.

He left the field before tea and did not return, having scored 170 in his only innings, but is expected to be fit to face Glamorgan in the Championship on Sunday.

  13. WI 20-1published at 18:19 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

Brathwaite is an unhurried, studious type and he's in no hurry to move the score on after lunch - he watchfully blocks out an array of inswingers and outswingers from Anderson for another maiden.

  14. WI 20-1 (Brathwaite 9*, Bravo 0*)published at 18:15 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

Alastair Cook makes his first bowling change, and summons Barbados-born Chris Jordan, who apparently went to the same school as Kraigg Brathwaite. Brathwaite plays out five dot balls and then tucks a single into the leg side.

"Darren Bravo's half-brother Dwayne Bravo, the former ODI captain, hasn't played a Test since 2010. He's now gone to the IPL, with one or two seasons there conflicting with Test cricket, and he's now said he's no longer available for Tests."

  16. WI 19-1published at 18:09 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

Darren Bravo is the new batsman. He's been one of the West Indies' more reliable performers in recent years, averaging in the mid-40s. He plays out the rest of Anderson's over without scoring.

"He has altered the angle from bowling round the wicket. Smith has had nice footwork but he wasn't quite forward; he was feeling for it and didn't get his foot out to the pitch. That ball didn't do very much - it just went a fraction - but it doesn't need to do much."

  18. WICKETpublished at 18:05 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

The master craftsman makes the breakthrough for England. Jimmy Anderson switches from around the wicket to over and the change of angle immediately befuddles Smith, who edges a beautiful delivery slanted across him into the gloves of Jos Buttler.

"You could do a lot more to keep Test-match cricket alive. For the last 20 years we've hardly done anything. If you'd treated Test cricket like a normal, commercial business, almost all the administrators running the game would have got the sack - because the number of people coming to the game has gone down and down and down.

"In a business, if they're losing money and the product is not selling, they have to do something about it. In cricket, all they have ever done is take more and more television money. You have to evolve the game."

  20. WI 19-0 (Brathwaite 8*, Smith 11*)published at 18:04 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

Broad continues. Brathwaite picks up two with a clip off his toes. In contrast to the afternoon session yesterday, when England really moved through the gears, this has been a sedate start after lunch.
