Richard Cooper: Can't see what Broad brings to the team. Jimmy builds pressure, six maidens v none from Broad. Needs to get back to county cricket.

James Phipps: When do the England selectors get called into question? Same team equals same results? Better openers and bowlers needed.

"When I was on tour with England, by the end of the tour, I couldn't stand the sight of most of the team, and then two minutes after leaving the airport after getting back home, I was missing them."

Kaiser Chiefs singer Ricky Wilson on TMS: "The Voice had finished, I felt like coming out here to chill out where no-one knows your name - and it feels like half of England's out here. I feel like a fish out of water as I've never been to a cricket match before, even though I grew up in the shadow of Headingley and I now live in the shadow of Lord's."

Jake Cartledge: Tredwell needs a big performance here otherwise the decision to not play Rashid will look a poor one...

Jon Amor: I will not stand by this Tredwell bashing! Am I seriously the only person who sees the value of a player like Tredwell?

So, a session that began well for England with the wicket of Devon Smith for the record-chasing James Anderson ends in frustration as Marlon Samuels and Kraigg Brathwaite make fairly untroubled progress, with the shine wearing off the ball and batting beginning to look easy.

Anderson bowled well at the start to remove Devon Smith, before Darren Bravo, who looked good in his brief stay at the crease, edged Chris Jordan behind. But Kraigg Brathwaite batted obdurately and Marlon Samuels added some impetus into the innings as the bowlers, Ben Stokes in particular, began to toil. This Test match is evenly poised with one session left on the second day.

"The message at tea will be: bowl with a bit more discipline, bowl dots, bowl straight and get the batsmen hitting straight with a straight field. The West Indies are back in the game but I prefer runs on the board."

Thomas Hammond: Cook claims he is the man to captain England, well a dicey little situation like this is the perfect chance to prove it.

Harun Mohamed: Love seeing Marlon Samuels bat, he is a bit like Kevin Pietersen, you don't know what you get with him but he is exciting to watch.

And that is the last action before the tea interval. A pretty even session that.

Marlon Samuels has been 'caught' in the slips - it looks like a bump ball, but we're going upstairs to make sure...

  12. WI 83-2published at 19:36 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

Tredwell keeps Samuels tied down for the first five deliveries of his over before the batsman manages to prevent a maiden with a single to midwicket off the final ball.

Ben Thapa: Stokes too full, but at least you can set a field to it. Better than the confidence-stripped guy bowling long hops last summer. Fear for Tredwell - doesn't play regularly for his county, lacks variety, could go the distance. Hope I'm wrong.

Mike Bell: Ben Stokes looks about as likely to take a wicket as I do to replace him at the end of his spell. #trundling

  14. WI 82-2 (Brathwaite 34*, Samuels 27*)published at 19:33 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

It's just not happening for Stokes at the moment - once again he strays with the first ball of his over and Samuels, who has injected a bit of tempo in to this West Indies innings, square-drives him handsomely behind point. England going through a bit of a tricky period here.

samf: Broad currently ranked one of the best in the world,, external let alone England. #Alwaysgetspickedon

  16. Samuels dropped on 21published at 19:29 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

A first bowl for James Tredwell, whose inclusion ahead of Adil Rashid did not exactly delight many in the TMS commentary box or on social media. And he nearly makes an immediate impact, sprawling full-length to this right to get a hand to a drive from Samuels but failing to cling on to a tough chance diving to his right.

"At my old school, Silverdale in Sheffield, the new school has been built over what was my cricket pitch. It's a real shame. You've got to be careful when you look at these participation figures - as a lot of kids play in three or four different age groups and they're counted three times."

Stokes serves up a drive ball off the first delivery of his latest, overpitched outside off again. He manages to keep it tight thereafter, but he's clearly not happy with his length - he boots the turf in frustration after his final delivery.

  20. WI 66-2published at 19:22 British Summer Time 14 April 2015

Marlon Samuels averages 35 in Tests but almost 70 against England. He clearly enjoys facing Anderson et al, but he manages to curb his usual attacking instincts to fend off a good over from Anderson: a maiden.
