My word, the replays of that James Anderson delivery make it look even better, nigh-on unplayable. It started on a line of off stump or just outside, then hopped in, almost at 90 degrees to clatter into the leg peg. Not only does it move big, bit moves so, so late. Mind you, Brathwaite played it like a man with lead in his helmet, falling over to be cleaned up. Darren Bravo is the new man, with Anderson now swinging the ball across this pair of left-handers.

"What a great ball, he has absolutely cleaned him up. What a ball after an over of gently bowling - that was brilliant. This is what I admire Anderson for most. Swing bowlers with the new ball can only swing it one way. He can swing it both ways and it is a serious skill. It is extraordinary really."

Bowled him! What a beauty from James Anderson, who does for Kraigg Brathwaite, neck and crop. After a previous over of away-swingers, Anderson produces a booming in-swinger that gets between bat and pad, destroying the timbers. Anderson doesn't need much encouragement, but in these conditions he could swing a satsuma round corners. Windies beware.

Stuart Broad to the left-handed Devon Smith, who is the first Grenadian to play a Test match in his home country. He's away with a single, with Gary Ballance then taking a very unusual position at short leg to Brathwaite, just around the corner, looking directly at the batsman's erm, backside. Swing for Broad too, who is picked off when he gets too straight for Brathwaite to get off the mark. An ethereal haze hangs over the ground, all a bit Wuthering Heights.

"There is a rendition of Jerusalem being sung, so the Barmy Army must be out here in force. This is one of those grounds where the fielders are going to have to get incredibly close to the stumps to get chances at slip."

  7. WI 0-0published at 16:48 British Summer Time 21 April 2015

Early movement for Anderson, the ball shaping away from the right-handed Brathwaite, who gropes at a rozzer that fizzes past the outside edge of the bat. Very big hoop, actually, but no great pace. Edge... just short of Ian Bell at second slip. Anderson will be licking his lips as he starts with a maiden, there's plenty in the air for him. No zip, mind, so getting it to carry to the grabbers might be an issue.

"For the young lads who have never been before it is brilliant for them to be around the team but for Bairstow and Rashid it is pointless. These days you can fly players out easily - they should be allowed to go home and play for Yorkshire in the Championship rather than sat here. Jimmy Anderson flew home from Perth for the birth of his child and flew back two days later. It is not like the old days where you have to take a boat."

Right then, believe it or not, we have cricketers out in the middle. James Anderson has the ball in hand and will be bowling to Kraigg Brathwaite. Three slips, a gully, a shirt leg and even some sunshine. The trumpeter plays Jerusalem as Anderson tears in...

Forget about how long we'll play, I've had it confirmed that there are 79 overs to be bowled today, so we've lost 11. There will be an hour-long session before lunch.

No word on the playing hours, but I suspect we'll be able to play until at least 23:00 BST, perhaps even half an hour longer than that. We could be going long in to the night, so settle in.

Daniel Reeves: I still wonder if Cook's the right captain if the number 11's biggest score in the last two years is better than the opener.

Tom Holmes: Get Root opening, push Moeen to 5, Stokes to 6 and Buttler to 7 and play a second spinner (Tredders or Rashid). Problem solved.

The cover on the pitch has been completely removed, and there are two members of the groundstaff apologetically dragging a rope around the outfield. I'm hearing that we will start at 16:45 BST. Wonders never cease.

David Grant: England couldn't take 20 wickets in Antigua so they've dropped a front-line spinner and replaced him with a part-timer.

David Moore: Is Stokes a shoe in? A major assumption in my opinion. Moeen is the established all-rounder.

Update. Sheet has come off the pitch. We're dangerously close to having conditions suitable for Test cricket.

The huge blue sheet that covered the square has been removed, only a smaller bit of plastic sitting on the pitch remains. We're only half an hour or so away from what was the scheduled lunch break. Surely we won't be having that?
