Chris Jordan had mixed fortunes before lunch - he missed out on a wicket when Gary Ballance dropped one at leg slip, then got his karmic payback a couple of balls later when Smith was erroneously given out caught behind.

No such drama in his first over after lunch though, as Samuels blocks out a maiden.

Right, we're ready to go again. Jordan to Samuels...

Come to think of it, it's been a memorable day for sporting forgetfulness. Earlier today, Ding Junhui missed out on a Crucible 147 after forgetting he was on a maximum. Then we saw Devon Smith appear to forget the availability of DRS when he was given out.

Somebody should remind David Luiz he's got a Champions League match against Barcelona this evening...

That Devon Smith business was rather curious, wasn't it? In case you're just joining us, the West Indian opener was given out just caught behind before lunch - but he didn't hit it! So why didn't he review it? Did he forget about DRS? Did he decide that, with a Test average of 25, he just wasn't worth it? Or perhaps he has plans for Saturday and fancies a four-day finish. We may never know...

Robert Pheby: If new technology aims to prevent howlers, when a batsman does not edge the ball, the umpires should recall him after replay.

Thank you Stephan. For a moment there when the drizzle was coming down, it looked like Stephan wouldn't be able to bring you any actual cricket in his morning stint and I'd be awkwardly converted from first-drop to live-text opener, a la Jonathan Trott.

But here I am in my usual slot, and with an intriguing afternoon session in prospect. Can England build on those morning inroads, or will Marlon Samuels - possessor of a mighty fine record against England - lead a Windies fightback? We shall see...

Right, with the players enjoying a brew and a biscuit, it's time for me to step aside for a little while. Here's James Gheerbrant.

On Test Match Special at the moment, there's another chance to listen to the excellent BBC Radio 5 live documentary James Anderson: The Wicket Man. If you've not heard it, do tune in. Mark Chapman interviewed Jimmy after every series over the past two years as he neared the England Test wickets record, which he broke in the last match.

Alan Compton: One wicket that should never have been given doesn't change anything. Jordan is a club bowler. No control.

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"It was a decent start for England, I do not think they have bowled great. You look at the pitch and it is doing a bit but not that much. Anderson, Broad, Jordan have swung it but not enough. If the West Indies bat well they could get 350-400. The West Indies are playing OK but England will have to bowl better. I do not think it is going to be easy to get 10 wickets on this wicket and you might need to bowl for dots and hope for a rash shot. You know their players, apart from Chanderpaul, are not occupy the crease types of players - they will play their shots."

When the players finally got out there, England just about managed to take advantage of the helpful conditions that were on offer. James Anderson has swung the ball around corners, producing an unplayable in-swinger to bowl Kraigg Brwathwaite, but some inconsistency and watchful Windies batting looked set to have the hosts at lunch only one down. However, a Devon Smith non-edge off Chris Jordan was given out and not reviewed, leaving West Indies 36-2 at the break.

Just joining us? Wondering why lunch is being taken late and after only 15 overs? We were delayed by rain for the best part of two hours, with play not beginning until 16:45 BST.

Rob: It seems that cheering when a wicket is taken is only acceptable if everyone knows that you're listening to the cricket through your headphones. Otherwise, judging by the looks I've just been given, it's totally unacceptable during your 8 year old son's judo lesson. Oops.

James Cowe: Good comeback by Chris Jordan there after that dropped catch. That wicket wicket gives England the session.

Now we know why Devon Smith stood for a moment - he didn't hit it. More replays show that there was daylight between bat and ball. Why didn't he review it? Was he not sure? Did he forget that DRS was in play? Either way, look in the scorebook and it says he's out. With that, England have had the better of the hour-long morning session.

  17. WI 36-2 (Jordan 2-0-8-1)published at 17:47 British Summer Time 21 April 2015

Smith stood for a little while, perhaps not believing what he had done. It was a very thin edge, the bat jamming down on the ground, while Buttler almost dropped the ball as he went to throw it up in celebration. Marlon Samuels the new man, with Moeen Ali sending down the final over before lunch.

    Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"It was really good planning from England. Having put that leg slip in the batsman would have been thinking things were safe but the ball just tails away from him. Good planning and execution. England would just have been worrying there, 28-1 is not a massive score but the pitch is not doing massive amounts."

Gone. Devon Smith falls to Chris Jordan, two balls after being dropped at leg slip by Gary Ballance. Jordan's danger was swinging the ball back in to the left-hander, but Smith, who left the ball well, followed a wide one and got a thin edge through to wicketkeeper Jos Buttler. That's a big boost for England, who were in danger of not taking full advantage of the early help.

Mark: Broad can produce a magic spell unfortunately they are all too few and far between.

David Hall: Stuart Broad once again bowls a wicketless opening spell and is withdrawn from the attack, when will he be dropped?

Jay: Broad gives Jordan some advice and Jordan sends one down the leg side. Sums up the state of affairs with English cricket.
