  1. Is Gillespie the right man for England?published at 13:51 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

    Alec Stewart
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"He keeps things simple. He was a tough cookie to play against, a fine bowler, but listening to the Yorkshire players, you can see that he's carried on his bowling ability into his coaching, just keeping it simple and allowing people to show off their talent."

  2. Is Gillespie the right man for England?published at 13:50 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"He doesn't have to come in at Headingley and be the main man. He could be there and be in the background. He has to see how English cricket works. If you appoint him, get him in early and let him see what he would do differently. He may be happy with it but he needs to have a look.

"I don't think Yorkshire would stand in his way. Yorkshire have people behind the scenes. Martin Moxon has done a superb job. They wouldn't rush into an appointment."

  3. Is Gillespie the right man for England?published at 13:49 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Paul Erdunast: An Australian leading England against Australia... anyone remember Pietersen's repeated success against South Africa?

StephenCWLL: Would welcome Gillespie as coach. He'd shake things up and speak the truth.

    Alec Stewart
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"It depends when Yorkshire are willing to release him from his contract. Is there a notice period? I'm assuming they will say it's absolutely fine, and they will have to look at themselves as well. The Ashes is so important. Why not give it to Gillespie for the Headingley Test match, so that come the start of the Ashes they can have him in there and just move forward?"

  5. Is Gillespie the right man for England?published at 13:48 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"If you go into coaching when you finish playing there are ladders you have to climb. He went to Zimbabwe and got experience and that led to the Yorkshire job when he could have stayed in Australia. He has had success in that position and knows how he likes to coach. He knows what he is about and how he wants his team to portray themselves.

"If an international job comes up you have to look at it. If the big three knocks on your door you have to taken a moment, speak to the family and see where you are at and look at it. It is the next step if you have ambition. It doesn't surprise me he would take it. I suspect the offer will come.

"He is the type of person who has the capacity to walk into a room and make people feel better about themselves. If England have decided they are the man, they should appoint him straightaway."

"Absolutely smashing it down at HQ, with very few people brave enough to stand in an uncovered area. The lunchtime entertainment was a band playing on the outfield - they got very wet and did not have much of an audience. It's wet, the floodlights are on. Quite frankly, it's 'orrible out there."

‏Gustav Gullberg: An Aussie leading England against the Aussies might be a crazy idea, but they need crazy ideas in order to stand a chance.

liverpool__1982: Having an Aussie as England coach is like having Fergie as Liverpool manager... Unthinkable.

So Jason Gillespie would take the England head coach's job if he is offered it by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

There is still the small matter of the ECB deciding to offer it to him but...

Is he the best man for the job? Would you accept an Australian in charge of the England team? What should be the new coach's priorities?

  15. Morning reviewpublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Another excellent session of Test cricket. England bowled pretty well, creating a few chances and making life generally pretty uncomfortable for the batsmen, but New Zealand hung in there well and are firmly in the box seat in this match, with an 18-run lead and six wickets still in the hutch.

Stuart Broad bowled an excellent, threatening spell and picked up the early wicket that England craved, having Ross Taylor caught down the leg side. But that brought Brendon McCullum to the crease and he batted with characteristic ferocity, knocking off the deficit and taking New Zealand into the black, before he was caught to give Mark Wood his maiden Test wicket.

England desperately need a flurry of wickets after lunch to minimise New Zealand's first innings advantage, while the tourists, who have plenty of batting to come, will simply want to grind England's faces into the dirt.

  19. Gillespie would take England jobpublished at 12:53 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

    Stephan Shemilt
    BBC Sport at Lord's

Jason Gillespie would take the England head coach's job if he is offered it by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The Yorkshire coach has been impressed by new director of English cricket Andrew Strauss after two positive face-to-face meetings this week.

Australian Gillespie said on Thursday he was one of several candidates in the frame for the position vacated by Peter Moores's sacking on 9 May.

England caretaker-coach Paul Farbrace has also declared his interest.

  20. NZ 407-4 (Williamson 112, Anderson 4)published at 12:53 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Oh my goodness, the luck just won't turn for Ben Stokes. He produces an absolute rozzer, rising sharply off a good length and taking the shoulder of Anderson's bat, but it flies over the slips. The ball is really talking under the lights.
