"I was just going to question why point was not at gully? He would have caught McCullum there. I'm not wanting to be critical but this is one of the most fearsome attacking batsmen in world cricket. England need to get him out now before he starts whacking them around."

  2. NZ 357-3published at 12:12 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Brendon McCullum is a lucky, lucky boy. He tries to give himself room on the leg side, Broad follows him with a sharp delivery into the ribcage, the ball pings off the shoulder of the bat and somehow drops safely into the vacant gully area. So close for England.

"I once asked McCullum what's going through his mind as he runs down the pitch to the pace bowlers. 'It's him or me,' was his reply. At all other times in this match, the picnic area on the Nursery Ground has been full. Not a soul there now, the people want to watch the Kiwi skipper bat."

"If it is 370-5 it will look a lot better for England. They have to keep believing. There is enough in the pitch. They need to keep bowling it in the right areas."

Now then, a change of bowling for England, and debutant Mark Wood is summoned back into the attack. To bowl to Brendon McCullum. It's like asking a keeper on his first day at the zoo if he wouldn't mind just cleaning out the lions' cage. McCullum goes easy on him first up though, just pushing a single to mid-on. Good start by Wood.

"It has been a funny old morning for England. They have bowled some good balls but when they have they haven't got the full reward. There were a few I saw this morning that I thought 'wow, I would have nicked them', but they got nothing for them. All I can say is that there is no shortage of effort or ability from England. Things just haven't gone their way. This is a moment now where they need to be roused."

"You can see Broad is trying to get it fuller. He has a short mid-off, trying to encourage a mistake from Williamson."

This is good from Broad, he's settled into a nice rhythm here and he's just managing to make Williamson a little uncomfortable. He draws a dicey little uppercut from the number three, he's very lucky not to get a tickle on that. Four more leg byes when Broad errs again. Sorry Jos. Time for drinks.

Ben Walker: McCullum charging Anderson with the new ball, 11.54 Saturday morning at Lords. Audacious & ace.

The floodlights are on, it's pretty gloomy out in the middle this morning. McCullum, never afraid to get a little bit funky, tries the rather unorthodox ploy of charging Jimmy Anderson - and it works pretty well as he manages to get four leg byes off his pad.

"It is one of those mornings when England know they need wickets and they have the conditions. The clouds came in at around 11am to create those perfect bowling conditions. They just need to capitalise."

  14. NZ 343-3 (Broad 20-3-53-2)published at 11:50 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Brendon McCullum has hit 33 sixes in his last 11 Tests. Watch your pork pies in the stands. Broad gets him driving loosely, leaden-footed, with a lifter outside off. Good bowling from the blond destroyer.

"That edge is the perfect scenario that I was talking about with the way Williamson plays the forward defensive. If he played it with an orthodox upright bat it would go straight to slip. I haven't seen many players play like that but I can completely understand why. Williamson's technique looks after him and gets him out of some difficult situations."

"Even Brendon McCullum's walk to the crease is menacing. Down the stairs, pause on the boundary edge, a couple of squats to stretch, like a prize fighter ready to dismantle his opponent. A kick of the heels, take guard by assaulting the ground with the bat, as if looking to dig a way back to New Zealand. Drive the first ball for four. Seatbelts on."

Adam Lee: Asking why we always pick Broad? That's why, just has a way of picking up wickets when his tail is up.

  18. NZ 341-3 (Williamson 106, McCullum 4)published at 11:47 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Kane Williamson plays the ball so late, with cashmere-soft hands, and it buys him a life here. He edges Jimmy Anderson but the ball dies just short of Alastair Cook. Agony etched on the face of the England skipper.

"Broad has bowled better. He is the one that the spotlight is on. He is almost the naughty child at the moment. Yesterday, he was the best of the seamers and offered something the others didn't."

Enter Brendon McCullum. He won't take long to get himself in. Right on cue, he bludgeons Broad's first ball to the mid-off boundary. Broad responds excellently, sending an absolute snorter inches past the skipper's bat-handle. Good contest.
