Ex-New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

"Well bowled Wood. He has done well this morning, got a little bit of movement off the pitch and in the air to cause some difficulty for Williamson in particular. Good pace as well. Some good signs, I think."

    Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"You can say what you want about McCullum, he has scored runs. When you've scored double and triple-hundreds, you're no mug. I'd love to bat with him."

  3. Not outpublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Nope, that's umpire's call on impact. Very good shout that, it was hitting leg stump pretty much full-ball, just not quite flush enough...

  4. Umpire reviewpublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Wood has hit Kane Williamson on the pad first ball! The umpire says not out, but England are sending it upstairs...

    Jeremy Coney
Ex-New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

"It is one of the stranger ways of getting caught, at third man. It is a wild swing that has taken a top edge and flown 98% of the way to the boundary before being taken by Root. The New Zealand captain hasn't achieved what he would have liked. He was just moving into that wild, aggressive stage where he imposed himself but it hasn't quite worked."

Mark Wood has his first Test wicket and it's a big one - the New Zealand skipper is back in the shed. McCullum just gets a bit too cocky, trying to launch a ball that's just too full for the shot and getting a huge top edge down to third man. A typically pyrotechnic innings from McCullum, who has done a fair bit of damage in his short stay.

    Jeremy Coney
Ex-New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

"The bat has come over the ball and it has hit him on the top of the thigh pad. These are dangerous times, though, for England. McCullum has a unique style. That six was a mow. It is the kind of shot you see every week on club cricket grounds. McCullum upsets players. Any equanimity just disappears."

  8. What is the worst job in cricket?published at 12:40 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Following Jos Buttler's keeping to Stuart Broad this morning, we asked what you thought was the worst job in cricket?

Jason Whitley: Worst job in cricket? Setting the field for Jade Dernbach's plethora or variations.

Sam Bartram: The worst job in cricket was surely Freddie Flintoff fielding at slip for big lad Harmy's first ball of the '06 Ashes.

  9. NZ 400-3 (Stokes 15-2-75-0)published at 12:40 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Kablammo! New Zealand are in the black, and suddenly Brendon McCullum is going big - he goes down the track and absolutely splatters Ben Stokes, launching one over the rope at midwicket. And he goes again, short and leg-sidish from Stokes and McCullum swats him disdainfully to the fine-leg fence. England are in trouble here.

  10. Is there rain coming?published at 12:35 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

  12. NZ 389-3 (Williamson 111, McCullum 30)published at 12:35 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

With his dark eyes and covetably uniform stubble, Mark Wood has a touch of the male model about him. Unfortunately, his bowling so far has been more High Street than haute couture. Tell you what though, he's unlucky here - he induces a loose drive from McCullum that flies in between second slip and gully and runs away for four. McCullum salts the wound with a powerful cut to the point boundary, and suddenly the scores are level.

  13. Williamson added to honours boardpublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

BLACKCAPS on Twitter:, external Kane Williamson went up on the Honour's Board straight away at the @HomeOfCricket. Special moment.

  14. NZ 380-3published at 12:30 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Another change of bowling - Ben Stokes is in to the attack for his first bowl of the morning. Four more byes, as a leg-sidish delivery flicks off McCullum's pads and beats the increasingly morose Buttler.

  15. What is the worst job in cricket?published at 12:27 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Elliott Bewley: By the looks of some of this wicket keeping, Buttler could be giving Joe Hart some competition for the Euro squad.

Clive Woodbridge: Worst job ever - wicketkeeping to Broad?

Is it the worst job in cricket? How about short leg for Moeen Ali's first few overs? Why not get in touch with us on Twitter (#bbccricket) or text (81111 UK only) and let us know what you think is the worst job in world cricket?

  16. NZ 374-3 (Wood 16-1-63-0)published at 12:27 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Poor old Jos Buttler - a morning's wicket-keeping at Lord's has knocked all the youthful brio out of him. Gone is the usual effervescent smile, replaced by the haunted thousand-yard stare of a grizzled war veteran. He's seen some things, man. Wood sends another ball skidding hopelessly past him, four more byes down the leg side.

  17. Postpublished at 12:22 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

    Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"McCullum is not going to hang around, it is not his way. It is his downfall sometimes but he has had other innings that are out of this world. He doesn't think negative."

  18. NZ 370-3 (trail by 19)published at 12:22 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Brendon McCullum twirls that bat about between deliveries as if it were made of balsa wood. Serious strength in those ink-covered forearms. He hasn't quite left his IPL instincts behind, but they're serving him well at the moment - he gets leg side of the ball and manages to squeeze Broad through cover for four. And then he flays him through the third-man region - still vacant - for another boundary. That deficit is coming down quickly now.

  19. Postpublished at 12:17 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

    Henry Blofeld
    BBC Test Match Special

"There is a vibrancy about the cricket now. It is good. It is the best England have bowled and you feel a wicket could come at any moment."

  20. NZ 359-3 (Williamson 109, McCullum 11)published at 12:17 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Williamson is just going through a bit of a sticky patch here. He's played and missed at a couple, now Mark Wood hits him in a tender area on the, ahem, upper thigh, and it just seems to discombobulate him. He sets off for a very risky single and would have been run out if Ben Stokes had hit the timbers. Chances coming for England.
