  1. Trevor Bayliss to be new England coach?published at 13:54 British Summer Time 25 May 2015

    Alec Stewart
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"Trevor Bayliss has suddenly appeared. He has got a good track record behind him - he coached Sri Lanka to the World Cup final. But he hasn't got a lot of international playing experience - he didn't play for Australia.

"Gillespie appeared to be the favourite. But Andrew Strauss said he would do a thorough job and then make a decision. And that's what his role is."

    Phil Tufnell
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"From what I've heard, he's a laidback kind of character who won't be putting his face up front - he'll let the guys and the captain get on on with it. It could be a good announcement."

Ollie Cross: Why does it matter that he's an Aussie? Trevor Bayliss is hugely underrated & would be a very astute appointment.

    Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"England are not worried about runs, it's game over for New Zealand, they are never going to get these in a million years. That mistake is all England want, then they're home and dry."

  5. NZ 34-3published at 13:54 British Summer Time 25 May 2015

Williamson scores the first runs off the bat of the session with a classy, well-timed back-foot push through cover for two. Watling follows it up with a driven four.

Brendon McCullum watches on from the Kiwi dressing room, chewing furiously on some gum. He'll have a role to play today, for sure. And if he treats the England bowling like he is that gum he'll score some quick runs as well.

"The clouds have just rolled over HQ, giving even more encouragement to an England attack that had the ball singing in the morning session. The crowd is expectant, oohing and aahing every time the bat is beaten. It could be a draining afternoon."

"The pitches are better and they last better nowadays. But there is the batting pressure - scoreboard pressure."

  8. NZ 25-3 (Williamson 7, Watling 5)published at 13:49 British Summer Time 25 May 2015

Wood is an aggressive, attacking bowler and starts with a bouncer that swings at its peak and swerves away from Buttler, who concedes four unlucky byes. The next two balls are belters that nip a touch of a length and have Watling playing inside them. Too good.

  9. NZ 21-3published at 13:46 British Summer Time 25 May 2015

Broad has four slips and gully and offers two that swing away before darting one back in that Williamson has to adjust to pat back. The in-form right-hander is the key man for the tourists. Broad is the main man for England. A great contest continues with a maiden.

Philip in Fethiye: 'Watching' the test via BBC updates at a waterpark in Fethiye, Turkey. Hoping the wicket taking slows down or I'll have to take my life in my hands on the slides again.

Will, the Mound Stand: Was undecided at 9am whether to trek up from Peckham to HQ. Turns out to have been one of my better Monday morning decisions.

Simon Price: In need of excuse for the girlfriend why I'm not at home and instead watching the cricket.

Ey up. Thank you very much Jamie. A fine stint, sir. Hopefully, I'm not going to take over and bring an end to all the excitement. This Test is poised for a cracking finish. Two sessions to go, England pushing for victory, Lord's packed to the rafters. Does it get any better?

But let's now return to the main reason we are here, and that is to see the conclusion of an outstanding Test match. England need a further seven wickets, New Zealand a presumably less likely 324 runs. There are a minimum of 64 overs remaining today.

Just to recap, England are in exclusive discussions with their new coach, understood to be Australian Trevor Bayliss.

Reports in Australia suggest the New South Wales and Kolkata Knight Riders coach, 52, is set to be appointed as Peter Moores's successor, possibly within the next 24 hours.

Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie held talks over the position with director of cricket Andrew Strauss last week.

Australian journalist Melinda Farrell from Cricinfo, on whether being Australian is a problem for Trevor Bayliss: "When you are a sportsman or professional coach the drive to win and the drive to succeed [overcomes everything else]. It will be great to have fresh new ideas come in.

"Andrew Strauss, when he had his presser here, was asked what his goal was and he said it was to make England a consistently world-class side.

"Australia set the bar really high and I think it will be really refreshing for England cricket to have someone come from that kind of background."

Daily Mail cricket correspondent Paul Newman: "I do think it's a slight issue having an Aussie coach because it is the old enemy. Could you imagine an Englishman coaching Australia? I certainly think it's a talking point, but these guys don't look at it like that."

Daily Telegraph deputy cricket correspondent Nick Hoult: "I would think the ECB would want to announce it as soon as possible. This a is a good news story: England have appointed a coach with really good track record. Presumably they haven't finished negotiations."
