"That was an expensive over, but there wasn't too much wrong with it. He's bowled six overs for 25, which is miserly by the standards of the rest of the series."

Morgan gets his feet moving to chip Wheeler over the top of the fielder at mid-off to earn him three runs. It is the kind of shot that brought him so much joy on Friday. It is a positive start to the over, which ends with a slice of luck for England as Root dances down and edges past his stumps and down to the rope at fine leg.

Michael Allen: Re Rob in London: I think Duckworth-Lewis was about right the other day. The claims that it was unfair suggest either a misunderstanding of cricket or, maybe more worryingly for our education system, of mathematics. A target of 34 off 13 balls is probably about the equivalent level of difficulty of 54 off 37, with only 3 wickets left.

  4. Eng 49-2 (Run rate 4.45)published at 11:18 British Summer Time 14 June 2015

That's more like it. Root drops to one knee to hammer a wide ball from Southee through cover for four. Lovely shot. Southee then sends one down leg, which Root flicks off his legs for another boundary. For the first time in a while, we have some cheers at the Ageas.

Ben: If a team chasing 240, are 100-9 off 20 overs when it rains, would Rob (4 overs) award them the game because wickets are irrelevant and they are "up with the rate"?

  6. Eng 41-2 (Root 5, Morgan 2)published at 11:15 British Summer Time 14 June 2015

Wheeler is finding a rhythm now. His best over so far keeps England to just a single, with a Root flick off the pads. England are finding this much tougher than the last two matches. That was very much New Zealand's power play.

"It's very important for the bowlers to make as much use as they can of these new balls. It looks like a very true surface. There's a little movement and the Kiwis have made quite a good start. But the fielding side is never safe in one-day cricket."

  8. Boult misses rest of tourpublished at 11:11 British Summer Time 14 June 2015

And here is the confirmation on Trent Boult's injury. New Zealand have tweeted, external that the left-arm pace bowler will miss the rest of the tour with a back injury, and will head home for further assessment.

Reshad Sergeant: Not sure about Jason Roy. Think England are a stronger team with Moeen Ali opening the innings with Hales.

  10. Eng 40-2 (Root 4, Morgan 2)published at 11:10 British Summer Time 14 June 2015

Root is a master of finding runs all round the pitch through sheer timing alone. He flicks a full ball from Southee to deep square for two and then adds another run with a steer to third man. England very much in consolidation mode.

  11. Eng 36-2published at 11:08 British Summer Time 14 June 2015

That is very, very close. It did flick the pad first before Morgan got his bat down but the tracker shows it was just flicking off stump. It is umpire's call so we stick with the on-field call of not out. And breathe.

  13. Umpire reviewpublished at 11:06 British Summer Time 14 June 2015

Southee thinks he has his man as he fires a ball in to the block hole to trap Morgan. Is it bat first or pad? That'll be the crucial aspect.

  14. Eng 36-2published at 11:05 British Summer Time 14 June 2015

Wheeler is pumped up after his first wicket but is still struggling for a consistent line and length. He allows Root to get off the mark with a cut shot for a single. Morgan is given the same luxury next ball. The yellow-bibbed Nathan McCullum and Trent Boult sit next to each other off the field. The former is giving a pair of sunglasses a damn good shining. Boult looks a bit glum. And no wonder as word is that he has been ruled out for the rest of this series.

Poor Jason Roy has received some belting balls already in his short international career. Goes to show that seamers can still have a big impact on 50-over matches, if they are of the top-class variety. Southee welcomes Morgan to the crease with a short ball that whistles past his helmet. It is the first of four scoreless balls to seal a wicket maiden.

"It was just a little nip-backer from Southee. It was one of those where the batsman played an immaculate shot, but all of a sudden off stump is pegged back. There is a little bit in this pitch."

New Zealand are rampant! Southee nips one back to Roy and cleans him up right through his forward defensive shot. England have lost both of their openers in the space of three balls. Eoin Morgan comes out to join Joe Root at the crease.

"It was just short of a length, maybe he rolled his fingers over it, like a little cutter. It was one Hales might have dispatched easily, but he tried to play it with a straight bat and got an edge to second slip. It held in the surface, so maybe pace off the ball is the way to go on this pitch."

Hales is kicking himself as he departs. He was accelerating nicely but has dropped a bit of a clanger to give Wheeler a first international wicket. The ball is angled across the opener and he chases it to nick to Southee at second slip.
