"The skipper looks in very good nick. The dressing room is a much happier place when the captain and best player are in form. In previous times, if England had lost a couple of wickets they would have gone into their shell. They still did that to some extent. But instead of taking 10 or 12 overs to start taking the game back to the opposition, it took 10 or 12 balls."

Eoin Morgan reaches his 25th ODI fifty - and his third fifty of the series - with a careful single off seventh bowler Kane Williamson.

The calls earlier this summer for Morgan to be dropped on the back of a disappointing World Cup showing seem to have gone away.

Gemoose: Please England fans. It's been a magnificent series played with great sportsmanship. Don't start complaining because you feel like you are on the wrong end of a decision. D/L has been around years, and it's the same rules for everyone. You make it sound like 54 runs from 37 balls with 3 wkts left was a forgone conclusion. But in reality one more wicket and you would have struggled.

With 29 overs gone, four Kiwi bowlers have bowled six overs each - but Santner, who took a bit of tap last over, is denied the chance of a sixth himself as the bearded medium-pacer Grant Elliott takes over at the Pavilion End. Morgan moves to 49 with a single, and Stokes has the crowd on their feet again as he reverse-sweeps him for four. He's certainly given England some much-needed impetus.

"Stokes was given the width to play with there and he flashed it past Guptill at backward point. The good thing about this England team is that they have the power to hit for four. In previous times they have not been able to reach the rope."

The sun's come out in Southampton, blue skies visible behind fluffy clouds as McClenaghan, who will stay on after this series to play in the T20 Blast for Middlesex, begins his sixth over. Morgan inches towards his fifty, while Stokes powerfully punches a straight drive past the bowler, but captain Brendon McCullum, as ever, stretches every sinew in the field to stop it going for four. Two taken, but there's no stopping a fierce square cut for four - the Durham man may remind the locals of a left-handed Robin Smith. Stokes has 16 from 11 balls.

"Anything that is outside the off stump is almost a free shot for the left-hander. If you are going round the wicket, that shot to cow corner is what the left-hander is looking for."

Stokes joins in the fun, going down on one knee and hoisting young Santner - who suddenly looks like a boy playing in a men's game - for a huge six over cow corner. Oh, how New Zealand might wish for a 30-year-old Daniel Vettori for their spin attack... Morgan, five short of his half century, shovels a two off his legs.

New Zealand persist with their all-Mitch bowling attack, with McClenaghan operating in tandem with Santner. (When you add in Messrs Starc, Johnson and Marsh, and the Mitch XI could be a decent side...).

It's also an entirely left-handed game at the moment, with two left-arm bowlers and two left-handed batsmen - but after some ones and twos, Morgan finally ends the boundary drought with a deft uppercut over the solitary slip for four.

Dave Nunn: Duckworth Lewis is the best we have and by use of historical records is predictive in the context of the means of history. It cannot possibly handle improbable though possible outcomes. It is unlikely to be very good at handling the outlier scores we have seen recently until such time as they become common place.

Chris: My solution? Two captains, the umpires and match referee get together and agree between them on a target in light of overs, resources and time. Sadly, I guess we can't trust them to produce a fair method, so we're lumped with an unfair method instead.

Ben Stokes may be a rugged northerner from Cumbria (though born in New Zealand, lest we forget), but Hampshire's clearly not warm enough for him as he strides out in a sleeveless sweater. He's off the mark with a single, but it's just two from the over as New Zealand keep the pressure on.

It was five overs and four balls without a boundary when that wicket fell - the sign of that pressure needing to be released?

Ex-New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

"Sometimes when you build pockets of pressure the batsmen feel that. Root has batted well but he went down and made room for the bowler. A good period of play has been rewarded for the New Zealand bowlers. I get the impression it is not as easy batting as it has been in the first two matches."

Mitchell Santner strikes - Root comes down the track trying to force the slow left-armer through mid-wicket and is bowled off his pads as he tries to work the ball across the line.

Thanks, Phil. TMS may be broadcasting from a hotel room today, but it's Joe Root and Eoin Morgan who are booking in for bed and breakfast here - leaving plenty in the tank to go big later on. Morgan is down on his back stretching between overs, perhaps he could do with a lie down? He gets a quick visit from the England physio.

The return of McClenaghan gives England a bowler to target. Root has a good go of breaking the field but cannot beat the man at mid-off with a powerful drive before swinging wildly and missing a short ball. Just two runs off the over. England are well-placed but feeling a tad frustrated. And with that my spell is done. I'll take my cap and jumper and hand you over to Mr Mark Mitchener.

A flick past a diving man at mid-on from Root gives England another single off Santner and this pair their 100 partnership, brought up in 110 balls. It is a very efficient recovery from those two early wickets.

Five singles off that Henry over, along with the big appeal. New Zealand are posing questions. So far, England are providing satisfactory answers.

Another classy, composed 50 for Root, who reaches the milestone with a single - very much the currency England are working in at the moment.

Henry smacks the ball into Morgan's pad with a ball that appears to be going down leg before erupting in a huge appeal. The umpire is unmoved, though. Close but no cigar.
