"It is not easy making your debut games for England as a specialist number seven batsman. But Billings has got a bit of time to make a very useful contribution here."

Stanley Stearman: Is that (the only) weakness in Buttler's game? Is that a couple of times he'd got out chasing wider balls and been caught behind? Or am I being harsh?

  3. Eng 229-5published at 13:12 British Summer Time 14 June 2015

England have the luxury of a specialist (ie non-bowling) batsman at number seven - the fair-haired Sam Billings, who is the regular wicketkeeper for Kent but will have a job on his hands to prise the England gauntlets from Buttler. Having scored three and 12 in his first two ODIs, he'll hope for a better knock today, and is off the mark with a single - England will be pleased to see Stokes pinch the strike with a single off the last ball. He has 42 from 26 balls.

Keith Walmsley: Aren't we having the wrong argument? Isn't it less an inherent problem with DRS and more a problem with how long it took to get the match re-started? If it had started again at 2100, two more overs and a more manageable score.

"It would have been called a wide had he left it, but he went for it and just caught the edge to Ronchi. McCullum will let out a big sigh of relief to see the back of Buttler. That is a big wicket. Billings is yet to get used to this weird and wonderful game at international level. Maybe today is the day."

Buttler chases a wide delivery and is easily caught behind by his opposite number Luke Ronchi. The ball before, he had pulverised Southee for four through extra cover, but it's a cameo of 13 from 10 balls for the Lancashire star.

James: We'll see a lot of exciting batting with both Stokes and Buttler at the crease over the next few years. We should start calling them the bash brothers.

  9. Powerplaypublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 14 June 2015

England have, as usual, delayed the batting powerplay until the last possible moment - there will be a maximum of four fielders outside the circle for overs 36-40. And Buttler takes advantage straight away, unleashing his trademark ramp-scoop over the wicketkeeper's head for four. The powerfully-bicepped Stokes is more agricultural in approach, clubbing Wheeler for back-to-back fours either side of the wicket.

"If the idea is to double your score after 30 overs, England are looking at around 340. The Wasp says they are on for 333."

Despite having made the breakthrough, Williamson is taken off as New Zealand turn back to Tim Southee in a bid to stem the flow of runs. Buttler, facing for the first time (and sporting stripes of white zinc cream across his cheeks and lips), guides his first ball for two off his legs, and adds another two as Southee keeps it tight. It's batting powerplay o'clock...

"The way New Zealand have played their cricket is a bit like the French rugby team of the 1980s. They are everyone's favourite second side. And England have responded to playing them."

Jos Buttler strides to the middle - are these ideal conditions for him to bat in the way we know he can, with 17 overs to go and wickets in hand? Stokes on-drives the recalled Wheeler towards the mid-wicket boundary where Elliott makes a superb tumbling stop to turn a likely four into two. Stokes is tucking into the bowling as ravenously as people will be tucking into Sunday roast dinners around the country, carving another four past the bowler, then adding a couple more to reach 32 from 21 balls.

Morgan hit ODI centuries on this ground against both Australia and Pakistan in 2010 - but he won't be adding to that tally here as he goes for a big slog-sweep and is bowled by Williamson as a delivery goes straight on. Send for the Buttler!

Morgan lifts Elliott over his head towards the pavilion for four - then gets hold of one even better, smacking it into the long-on rope on the full, and after a quick check with the TV pictures, umpire Tim Robinson signals six. A single means Morgan has 67 from 76 - Stokes has 22 from 15.

Tayo Sowole: Re: 27 overs. A team of Mitchs would be short of quality in the batting department. They could bowl teams out for 50 though.

Williamson, bowing his remodelled off-spin round the wicket to the two left-handers, is easily milked for three successive twos by Morgan - it's as though the arrival of Stokes has also given the skipper a shot in the arm. He has 56 from 71 balls - but 15 from his last 14.
