An interesting first half of the day - England won the toss and batted (with Brendon McCullum implying he would have fielded first) and they were going nicely at 34-0 when openers Jason Roy and Alex Hales fell in the space of three deliveries.

Captain Eoin Morgan (71) then led by example, adding 105 with Joe Root (54) and 55 with Ben Stokes, who hit 68 from 47 balls and was well supported by Sam Billings who made 34 from 16 balls.

However, Billings's departure was the start of a collapse as England lost their last five wickets for 14 runs in the space of 22 balls - leaving them 302 all out.

Tim Carlisle: England probably 50 short but not out of it - important to keep taking wickets regularly and not let dangermen play.

Gill: Several times you have mentioned "cow corner". Exactly what part of the ground do you mean?

It's the area of the boundary between mid-wicket and long-on, supposedly where a "cow shot" is likely to end up!

England's collapse also means we get a "proper" full-length interval - play will be resuming at around 14:45 BST.

During the interval, you'll be able to hear on Test Match Special about how the England women's team are inspiring the next generation of cricketers.

Dave in Chigwell: It says something that a score of anything 280 to 300 would have been seen as a great score by the powers at be in English cricket. Now we are slightly disappointed by this score. Come on you Lions.

Rob Meech: Not going to criticise England for their brand of cricket, but we need to be smarter when wickets tumble at the death.

  9. Beware Guptillpublished at 14:03 British Summer Time 14 June 2015

New Zealand opener Martin Guptill will have particularly fond memories of this ground. In 2013, he hit an unbeaten 189 as New Zealand scored 359-3 from 50 overs and won by 86 runs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series just ahead of the Champions Trophy.

Seven of the Black Caps XI that day are playing today, while only Root, Morgan and Buttler remain from that England XI. The game marked the end of Jade Dernbach's ODI career after he took 0-87 from 10 overs.

As the Southampton crowd's thoughts turn towards their lunch, I'm sure they will feel they've been royally entertained - despite England's late collapse. But New Zealand will not be daunted when you consider how they batted the last time they played an ODI at this venue...

    Jeremy Coney
Ex-New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

"I think New Zealand will be happy with that. It is the McCullum method of all-out attack and it has worked for him today. The sun has come out and batting is always a little bit easier when that occurs."

Just like that, it's over as Finn loses his off stump to Tim Southee. England leave 4.4 overs unused, but on the other hand, they didn't look like scoring 300 very often in the World Cup?

Meanwhile, bowling England out in the allotted three-and-a-half hours may have saved New Zealand from a possible over-rate fine if the innings had gone the distance.

After four wickets for 12 runs in 18 balls, England must now rely on Steven Finn to bat out six overs. Hopefully for them, he can clearly recall his performance as nightwatchman in Dunedin a couple of years ago when some stoic resistance brought him a Test fifty.

England are unravelling as a single from new batsman Mark Wood takes them to 300 but Willey then holes out at deep mid-off attempting a cross-batted baseball shot at a slower bouncer. England do have 300, but as we all know now, 400 is the new 300...

    Isa Guha
Ex-England seamer on BBC Test Match Special

"He will be disappointed with that will Stokes. He looked good but was just starting to lose his shape a bit towards the end. It is that old rule: bowl at the stumps. When they miss, you hit."

But it's all over for Stokes as he goes for another legside heave and loses his leg stump as Wheeler, who finished with debut figures of 10-0-63-3, is rewarded for his accuracy.

Having been sitting pretty post-powerplay, England have lost three wickets for 10 runs in 15 balls, and may now be battling to use their full allocation of overs.

As debutant Wheeler begins his last over, Willey, son of former England batsman (and Test umpire) Peter Willey, doubles his score with a single - his job will be to give Stokes as much of the strike as possible for the last seven overs. Stokes moves to 68 with a single, and fellow left-hander Willey is not daunted by a short ball as he clubs it through mid-wicket past the diving Elliott for four.

Hugo in Cheshire: Is this out?: Yesterday club cricket wicket. The batsmen reverse sweeps the ball straight into the ground then the ball pitches up hits his bat again on his follow through and is caught at backward point. Given out then umpire changes his decision. Can you advise?
